A Favero golden goal gets the Falcons past Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – In Notre Dame College's first overtime appearance of the season, they used a golden goal in the 104th minute to beat Shepherd University and snap a two-game losing streak.

NDC, who moves to 11-0 all-time against Shepherd, had opportunities with eight shots-on-goal in the first half of play.

In the initial 20 minutes, the Shepherd defense struggled to keep the ball away from the NDC offense. Between the 12th minute and 19th minute, the Falcons took four shots that were saved by SU goalkeeper Jose Machado Orellano.

In the final five minutes before halftime, Notre Dame took four shots and two were on goal.

Over a 17 minute span, beginning at the 63rd minute mark in the game, the Falcons offense had the possession for the majority of the time and racked up seven shots and five corner kicks.

Junior Arthur Favero took a penalty kick in the 89th minute, but Machado Orellano saved the shot.

The Rams' took only one shot in the second half and did not get a shot off against the Falcons in the overtime periods.

Favero took two shots in the second overtime period and the last shot he took, he converted into the game winning goal, assisted by freshman Nicholas Felician. For Favero, the golden goal was his first game winner of the season. He now has six goals on the year.

"The team never stopped doing the right things, from minute one to the last second," head coach Carl Nolan said. "It would have been easy to have become frustrated and slip into bad habits, but we didn't. It was a great team performance, and if our finishing was better, we would have won convincingly. I am proud of how we kept doing the right things and got the win that we came for."

Sophomore Varis Singh Khera and freshman Connor Russo both took five shots for Notre Dame. Junior goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis delivered two saves.

Angel Serellon led the Rams with three shots. Machado Orellano ended the contest with 13 saves.

Notre Dame will play Urbana University at home on September 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
