SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College used a solid defensive effort coupled with a balanced offensive attack with two goals in each half for a 4-0 victory over Gannon University on Thursday afternoon.
Early in the first half, the Golden Knights had many chances around the goal, taking three shots within the first seven minutes.
NDC redshirt-junior
Arthur Favero had an opportunity to put the ball in the net at the 15-minute mark. He took a shot that was blocked and then immediately had a second shot that was saved by Gannon goalkeeper Hedi Mehnaoui.
The Falcons, who are now 7-2 in season opening games since 2010, put the first goal on the scoreboard when junior
Paolo Termine put the ball into the back of the net from about 25 yards away that wrapped around to the outside corner of the goal in the 24th minute.
Not too long after that, senior
David Perez Torralba, who assisted on the first goal, took a pass from junior
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque for the second goal of the game in the 27th minute.
Favero had another chance with about 15 minutes remaining in the half, but the ball rolled past Mehnaoui and hit the post.
Just about four minutes into the second half, freshman
Connor Russo scored his first collegiate goal, taking advantage of a big Gannon miscue. A defender passed the ball back to the goalkeeper, but it was lifted over Mehnaoui's head, resulting in an easy shot for Russo.
Then in the 62nd minute, Favero cashed in on his opportunity scoring from the right side of the box on an assist from Russo.
In the final fifteen minutes of the contest, GU took three shots, but they were all over the mark.
"We looked organized and communicated well defensively today," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "Going forward, I was pleased with our work-rate and ideas."
Notre Dame took 13 shots and seven on goal. Favero led the Falcons with five shots and two shots on goal. NDC has now defeated Gannon in five of their last six matchups.
Gannon took 12 shots but Notre Dame junior goalkeeper
Daniele De Angelis only had to corral two saves.
The Falcons will play Mercyhurst University, at home, on Sunday, September 2. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
