Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jacob Bunner

Another shutout for men's soccer in win over Mercyhurst

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On a sunny Sunday afternoon, Notre Dame College put together their second shutout in as many games as they defeat Mercyhurst University by a score of 2-0 on Mueller Field.

The Falcons (2-0) and Lakers (1-1) were scoreless and in a tight battle through the first half of play. At halftime, both teams had only taken one shot on goal, each.

Mercyhurst attacked early in the game and forward Hady Sarr took a shot that was saved by junior goalkeeper Daniele De Angelis. The Falcons had an opportunity in the third minute when a pair of corner kicks led to two consecutive possible headers but neither resulted in a goal.

The action increased immediately when the second half began. Even with the temperature rising on the field, the Falcons were able to put together a strong attack. In the 46th minute, junior Giulio Bellei led a scoring play off with a strong pass to set up senior David Perez Torralba in the box. Torralba put the ball in the net, past a diving goalkeeper.

MU had one of their best opportunities of the second half in minute 83, when Austin Baraona took a shot from just outside of the box, but De Angelis made the catch in front of the goal.

The NDC insurance goal came in the 88th minute. Redshirt-junior Arthur Favero booted a free kick, from 25 yards out, into the top left corner of the goal.

For the Falcons, both of Torralba's shots were on goal while Connor Wilkinson led the Lakers with two shots taken. Notre Dame had five shots on goal while Mercyhurst only had two.

"I think we actually played better today than the previous game," head coach Carl Nolan said. "We gave some chances up, but created a lot more. We asked for energy and work-rate today, and I think in very testing circumstances, the players delivered. A real team performance, that I am extremely proud of."

Notre Dame will play West Virginia Wesleyan College, at home, on September 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
