AVON, Ohio – In the final home doubleheader of the season, the Notre Dame College baseball team split the pair of windy games against Urbana.
Battling for a spot in the MEC Tournament, the Falcons were able to win the first game 4-3 after scoring three runs in the teams final two offensive innings.
Urbana was able to get a quick 2-0 lead after scoring one run in each of the first two innings, but Notre Dame was able to put the next three runs on the board with
Austin Barnhart bringing in
Nick Farrell in the second inning and scoring a run of his own in the fifth inning along with
Lukas Thompson.
Down one, the Blue Knights tied things up in the sixth inning, but they weren't able to keep it even for long. In the bottom of the sixth,
Adam Purdy hit a single to center field to score
Ricky Phillips.
Cam Fuller closed the game out for NDC, earning his second win of the season striking out two batters in 1.1 innings.
Josh Armbruster, who started the game, struck out seven.
In the second game, the pitching duel went in favor of the visitors. Starting pitchers Tyler Bess and
Kenny Pierson each went the distance without giving up any earned runs and allowing just nine combined hits. Pierson was able to win the strikeout count with four compared to Bess's two.
Urbana took advantage of a pair of errors from NDC in the fourth and fifth inning to score one run in each and win 2-0.
The Falcons are now tied with Fairmont State for third place in the MEC North Division at 15-15. NDC will finish its season with two games at Urbana while Fairmont State will play the league leading Shepherd Rams. West Liberty is also in the mix at 15-13 and will play four games against Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday and Sunday.
Notre Dame will play at Urbana on Sunday, May 6. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
