URBANA, Ohio – With a win on Sunday, the Notre Dame College baseball team secured its spot in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. The Falcons split a doubleheader at Urbana, but finished with a 16-16 MEC record to finish in the top three of the Northern Division.
NDC opened the day up with a well-balanced game that saw great output from the bats and the pitching. The Falcons totaled 11 hits while
Chris Murphy threw a complete game without allowing an earned run.
On their 11 hits, the offense scored five runs with at least one coming in each of the first three innings. In the top of the first,
Ricky Phillips drove in a run on a single to left field. The Blue Knights would tie it up in the bottom of the inning, scoring off a fielding error, but that's where their scoring would end.
In the second,
Austin Barnhart hit a home run to score himself and
Naja Garcia. Then, in the third inning, Garcia would hit in another run.
Adam Purdy recorded the final RBI of the game in the fifth inning with a single to right field to move the final score to 5-1.
Murphy powered through the Urbana lineup, only facing 26 batters in seven innings. The Steubenville, Ohio native struck out 11 batters, which ranks second in NDC single-game history.
In the second game, the Falcons got off to a 4-1 lead after RBIs from Purdy and
Zach Santoro, but the Blue Knights scored five runs in the fifth inning to go up 6-4.
That's where the game would end after the teams tried to wait out multiple lightning delays.
The Mountain East Tournament is scheduled for May 10-13.
