WASHINGTON, Pa. - At Wild Things Park, the Notre Dame College baseball team won its first game against West Liberty 5-2, but fell in game two 4-0.
The Saturday contests started with a West Liberty run in the opening inning as the Hilltoppers used a sacrifice fly to get on the board early. In the fourth inning,
Ricky Phillips singled to right center to bring in
Nick Farrell. WLU didn't take long to regain its lead, as Ethan Estes, who scored the first run of the day, batted in leadoff hitter Vincent Haddox.
The Falcons got things going in the seventh and final inning as they scored three runs. With two out on the board, down one run,
Adam Purdy came up to bat with runners at first and third base. Purdy hit in both runners after hitting a triple to score the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, Purdy and
Drake May would see home plate to give the Falcons a 5-2 lead.
Devon Robb, who pitched the final two innings after taking over for starter
Tyler Gault, closed out the game and earned the win after allowing just one hit and striking out two batters in his appearance. Gault threw the first five innings for NDC and struck out three.
After combining for 15 hits in game one, the teams struggled offensively in game two as they totaled just six hits. Both pitchers went the distance as
Chris Murphy and Parker Dyson shared the mound.
Murphy allowed just one earned run throughout the game while striking out three batters.
The Hilltoppers took advantage of fielding errors to score one unearned run in the first inning and two in the fifth.
