Impressive performances lift Falcons at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - A pair of pitchers went the distance for Notre Dame College on Sunday afternoon at West Liberty as the Falcons left West Virginia winning three of their four games against the Hilltoppers. To balance out the arms, NDC also came up big in crucial moments with their bats.

Adam Purdy got things going early with a triple in the first inning to score Lukas Thompson. In scoring position, Purdy scored a run of his own after Drake May singled up the middle to put NDC up 2-0 in the opening inning.

WLU responded in the second and third inning to score two and one, respectively and take a 3-2 lead, but the Falcons replied as well in the fourth.

The first three batters got on base for Notre Dame in the fourth inning as Austin Barnhart was hit by a pitch, Leo Wells doubled and Thompson singled. Thompson's hit brought Barnhart home to score the tying run, but he would be picked off later in the inning after the Hilltoppers pitching struck out a visiting batter.

With two outs and a runners on first and third, after Nick Farrell was walked, May was able to record his second RBI and second single to score the go-ahead run.

Starting pitcher Josh Armbruster finished the game with three scoreless innings and earn his second win of the season 4-3. In his fourth complete game of the year, Armbruster forced the ball into play as the Hilltoppers grounded out 13 times.

In the second game, it was Kenny Pierson who controlled the mound for the Falcons. The junior from Sheffield Lake, Ohio, went all seven innings without allowing an earned run. Pierson has won all three of his starts this season and has gone 17-straight innings without allowing an earned run. Against West Liberty, he struck out five batters.

The Hilltoppers scored their lone run in the fourth inning, but NDC came back with two runs in the fifth inning and seven runs in the sixth to win 9-1. Barnhart and Zach Santoro led the team with two RBIs each while seven individuals each recorded a hit.

The Falcons are now 7-9 in Mountain East Conference play after winning six of their last eight games against MEC teams.

Notre Dame will play a single game at Mercyhurst on Tuesday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
