SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College wrapped up the regular season with a double-header against West Liberty University, on Saturday afternoon. In game one, WLU won by a score of 4-0 but NDC bounced back with a 4-3 victory in game two.
In the third inning of game one, Kat Donzella hit a two out triple to right field. Kelly Mullins then hit a slow rolling single to the left side of the infield, to put West Liberty (20-22, 12-18 MEC) on top, 1-0.
Notre Dame (19-29, 14-17 MEC) came close to scoring in the fourth inning. Junior
Shelby Stephens walked to start the inning. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then went to third base on a ground out. However, the Falcons were unable to score the run.
The Hilltoppers added runs of insurance in the seventh inning, after Conner Assif doubled and Audrey Meloun reached on an error. Kelsi Johnson then homered to left field, giving West Liberty a 4-0 advantage.
Johnson and Mullins each had two hits for WLU. Makenzie Amend (14-9) was the winning pitcher after pitching a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out ten hitters.
Amy Hoover had two hits for NDC and
Taylor Olson (10-15) threw seven innings, in the pitching circle allowing four runs and striking out six. She was given the loss.
In game two, Katie Beeman led off with a double and went to third base on a groundout to second base. Donzella hit an RBI single to second base.
Notre Dame quickly tied the game at one when senior
Amy Hoover hit her first home run of the season, and third home run of her career, to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Three batters later, sophomore
Ariel Linberger put a charge into a ball that cleared the right field fence for a solo homer.
NDC then scored two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hoover hit a ball down the left field line that got past the left fielder, Mullins. Junior
Halli Swiger scored from first base and Hoover came all the way around to score for an inside-the-park home run. Notre Dame went ahead 4-1.
West Liberty did not go away quietly and in the top of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second base, Kate Meloun singled to left field for an RBI. Skylar Fankhauser then doubled to score another run. With the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run on second base, freshman
McKenzie Zigmont struck out Haley Collett.
For NDC, Hoover had three RBI and two runs scored. She had four hits over the two games. Zigmont (9-7) was the winning pitcher as she threw a complete game, allowing three runs and struck out four.
Donzella was 4-for-4 at the plate and Assif was 2-for-3. Amend (14-10) pitched six innings in game two, and allowed four runs on six hits.
