SALEM, Va. – Notre Dame College played two games in the Mountain East Conference tournament on Friday. The Falcons lost, 8-0, against West Virginia Wesleyan College and then fell to the University of Virginia's College at Wise by a score of 1-0, later in the day.
In the first game, West Virginia Wesleyan scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. A leadoff double, followed by an RBI single, put the Bobcats on the board. Four batters later, with runners on second and third, Madison Casto singled in one run and Sara Scoone also singled to score the third run of the inning.
WVWC scored one unearned run in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning. Along with the unearned run in the fifth, West Virginia Wesleyan scored three more runs in that inning, on an RBI double and two RBI singles.
The Falcons only hit in the game came from senior
Amy Hoover who hit a double in the sixth inning. MEC Pitcher of the Year, Hannah Vet (25-4) picked up the win as she went six innings, striking out five hitters. Four WVWC hitters had two hits and Aylin Gutierrez had three hits and one RBI.
In game two, a throwing error allowed Cavaliers' shortstop Nikki Smith to reach second base, and a runner to come home, in the fourth inning. The unearned run put UVa-Wise on top 1-0.
That would be the only run that NDC freshman
McKenzie Zigmont (9-8) allowed, as she took the loss. She struck out seven hitters.
UVa-Wise's Taylor Brandts (16-12) earned the victory after pitching seven, scoreless, innings striking out seven batters.
Notre Dame was able to get a runner to third base when Hoover tripled to left center field in the top of the sixth inning.
