SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College used a big four-run second inning to win game one by a score of 7-3 and then Concord used a late long ball to win 7-3, on Sunday afternoon.
Before the double-header, seniors
Amy Hoover,
Nicole Paolucci and
Myranda Rowland were honored for the work that they put in at NDC. In game one, Concord (15-23, 12-16 MEC) put one run on the board in both the first and second innings. Notre Dame (17-28, 12-16) bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
In that inning, freshman
Katelyn Rheude hit a ground out back to the pitcher and then junior
Samantha Flowers struck out swinging, however, Flowers reached first base on a dropped third strike. Sophomore
Kathryn Smith singled and then junior
Halli Swiger reached on an error. With bases loaded, Hoover hit an RBI single, junior
Shelby Stephens knocked in a run with an RBI single and sophomore
Ariel Linberger capped the inning with a two-run single.
Concord would draw within two runs, 5-3, following an RBI double in the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the inning, Flowers singled to right center field, scoring two more runs.
Linberger and Flowers had two RBI for Notre Dame. Stephens and Linberger both had multi-hit games. Sophomore
Taylor Olson (9-14) picked up the win after pitching a complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out nine hitters. Olson has now struck out a combined 20 hitters over her last two starts.
Just like in the first game, Notre Dame took the lead in the second inning of game two. Smith singled to left field, scoring Flowers.
Concord took the lead in the fourth, when they plated two runs. With a run already in, and runners on first and third base, Jenna Witt hit a hard ground ball that bounced up and hit freshman
McKenzie Zigmont on the pitching hand. A run scored on the play, putting CU on top, 2-1. Freshman
Mikayla Grajczyk entered the game and retired the final batter of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, junior
Erin Calhoun singled and Flowers reached second base on a throwing error by the third baseman. Sophomore
Alyssa Larson grounded out to second base, allowing a run to score, tying the game at two.
Concord took their largest lead of the day in the top of the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and second base, Witt hit a pop up in the infield that dropped and then rolled into foul territory. Witt went to second base and a run scored. The next batter, Rachel Pritchard, hit a three-run home run to left field. Later in the inning, Amber Stokes hit an RBI single to left field, putting Concord up by a score of 7-3.
Rowland, Flowers and Smith all had two hits for NDC. All five runs in the sixth were charged to Grajczyk (0-4), who took the loss, but none of them were earned runs. She pitched two innings.
For Concord, Witt, Pritchard and Kayle Starnes each had two hits. Darby Fitzpatrick (9-9) got the win after allowing three runs in seven innings.
NDC will play Wheeling Jesuit University, at home, on April 27. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
