SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College sweeps the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Saturday afternoon, with two walk-off wins. In game one, the Falcons won 1-0 in 10 innings and in game two they won by a score of 3-2.
In game one, both pitchers were locked in a dual for much of the day. Taylor Brandts was perfect after nine innings for UVa-Wise (24-18, 13-13 MEC), while sophomore
Taylor Olson stuck out eight hitters through seven innings for Notre Dame (16-27, 11-15 MEC). Neither pitcher gave up a run through nine innings.
Beginning in the 10th inning, both teams start their half inning with a runner on second base, because of the tiebreaker rules. For the Cavaliers, the runner on second, Nikki Smith, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt. However, UVa-Wise sent back-to-back pinch-hitters to the plate, and both struck out swinging.
NDC did not have a baserunner in the first nine innings, but in the bottom of the 10th, sophomore
Alyssa Larson ran for junior
Halli Swiger, who was placed on second base. Senior
Amy Hoover moved Larson over with a sac bunt and then with two outs, junior
Erin Calhoun dropped a walk-off single between the shortstop and left fielder.
Alexis Miles and Taylor Creasey each had two hits for UVa-Wise. Brandts (13-9) was saddled with the loss after allowing one unearned run and striking out 14 batters.
For Notre Dame, Olson (8-14) got the win after pitching all 10 innings and striking out 11 hitters.
Both teams were scoreless through four innings in game two. UVa-Wise scored in the fifth inning when Miles doubled to left field, scoring Zoe Millard.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, with two outs, Hoover reached on an error, senior
Myranda Rowland reached base on a bunt and Calhoun was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded, sophomore
Ariel Linberger hit a two-run single up the middle, giving the Falcons the lead.
To lead off the seventh inning, Casey Chambers tied the game at two with a home run over the right field fence.
NDC responded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Calhoun singled to the left side of the infield and moved to second on a groundout to the pitcher. She went to third on a wild pitch and freshman
McKenzie Zigmont hit a walk-off single to right field, scoring Calhoun.
Hitters two through seven in the Falcons lineup had, at least, one hit. Junior
Samantha Flowers had two hits. Zigmont (8-7), along with helping herself with the game winning hit, got the win as she pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven. This is Zigmont's fifth consecutive start allowing two earned runs, or less.
Notre Dame will celebrate senior day at home, on Sunday, when they battle Concord University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
