First-day sweep by Falcons in Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. - With both sides of play getting things done, the Notre Dame College baseball team won both its games at Wheeling Jesuit in the first part of a four-game series.

In game one, pitcher Josh Armbruster threw his sixth complete game of the season to win his fourth-straight game. The senior from Broadview Heights, Ohio struck out eight batters to stay unbeaten since March 31.

The Falcons scored the first three runs of the game in the second and third innings as Ricky Phillips, Jacob Carpenter and Drake May were the first to round the bases. WJU scored a run of their own in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1, but Notre Dame wasn't finished scoring.

In the fifth inning, Phillips hit a double to score May and was brought in himself by Naja Garcia. NDC capped of the game with Garcia scoring off a double from Leo Wells in the seventh inning. The Cardinals scored one in the seventh as well, but lost 6-2.

Game two saw another hot pitcher on the mound for NDC. In an 8-3 victory, Kenny Pierson improved to 5-0, winning all five of his starts this season. Pierson struck out four batters and allowed just two earned runs.

Zach Santoro, Joseph Paskell and May led the team with two hits apiece as the Falcons recorded 10 total hits. Paskell, Santoro and Ryan Kosmynka each had multiple RBIs with Paskell leading the crew with three. Paskell also topped off his multi-hit, multi-RBI performance with two runs.

Notre Dame will finish its series at Wheeling Jesuit tomorrow, April 22, with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
