WHEELING, W.Va. - With two wins on Sunday afternoon to match the two earned on Saturday, the Notre Dame College baseball team swept its series against Wheeling Jesuit.
Game one saw a pitching duel as both starters went the distance.
Chris Murphy won the game with a complete-game shutout after striking out seven batters.
Notre Dame won the game 2-0 with two early runs in the second inning. With runners on second and third,
Austin Barnhart batted in the first run of the game as
Jacob Carpenter was able to score off a ground out to the shortstop. In the next at bat,
Lukas Thompson brought in
Naja Garcia on a single to center field.
Six different Falcons earned hits in the first game while Thompson and
Drake May got on base in three of their four plate appearances. Both Thompson and May earned one hit and two walks.
NDC's offense got things going in game two scoring nine runs on 12 hits to win 9-3. After Wheeling Jesuit scored two runs in the first inning, Notre Dame replied with three of its own in the second. Garcia doubled to bring in two runs while Barnhart once again scored Carpenter, this time on a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals would score once more in the bottom of the second to tie things up 3-3, but the Falcons would score the game's final six runs to leave Wheeling with four wins.
Garcia's two RBIs led the team as seven different players batted in a run.
Zach Santoro,
Ricky Phillips and
Leo Wells led the team with two hits each while Santoro and
Joseph Paskell each scored two runs.
Cam Fuller joined Murphy in the win column after pitching the first four innings of the game.
Todd Marshall and
Devon Robb threw the final three innings without giving up a run. The three combined for four strikeouts.
The wins improve NDC's conference record to 13-11 and move them to third in the Northern Division in the Mountain East Confernce.
Notre Dame will play Lake Erie College on Wednesday, April 25, at 2 p.m. in Avon, Ohio.
