SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Friday evening, Notre Dame College held the game close for the first 25 minutes, but West Virginia Wesleyan College pulled away to win by a final score of 20-6.
After West Virginia Wesleyan (6-5-1, 1-1 MEC) went ahead 3-0, Notre Dame (3-9, 0-3 MEC) scored two of the next three goals. Freshman
Natalia Gardner scored a goal at the 25:02-mark and then junior
Taylor Henderson put the ball in the back of the net with 22:43 to go in the first half, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Bobcats.
NDC then allowed four goals, but bounced back to score two consecutive goals. Senior
Katherine Elsenbeck and sophomore
Blaike Windsor made the score 8-4 with 5:56 remaining before the half.
The Bobcats were able to put three additional points on the scoreboard in the final five and a half minutes and led by a score of 11-4 at halftime.
WVWC scored the first seven goals of the second half. Henderson scored the first goal of the half for NDC, and the Falcons trailed 18-5 with 8:26 remaining in the game.
West Virginia Wesleyan went on to win the game, 20-6.
For West Virginia Wesleyan, Hannah Antonelli led the team with seven goals and Natalie Schaffner added four goals. Both, Madison Duvall and Kim Lubic scored three goals. Shaffner also won seven draw controls and caused four turnovers. Gabrielle Cleaveland saved 11 shots.
Henderson had three goals for Notre Dame and freshman
Abigail Plewes grabbed five draw controls. Freshman
Morgan Belting had 10 saves.
The Falcons will play Shepherd University on April 22, at home. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
