Notre Dame splits double-header with Lake Erie; NDC wins game two with a walk-off

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In a double-header that featured two walk-offs, Notre Dame College lost game one by a score of 4-3 and then beat Lake Erie College, 5-4, with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning, on Thursday afternoon.

Because of weather, the games were played on Normandy Field. However, the teams decided Lake Erie (10-16) would be the home team in game one.

Notre Dame (14-27) took the lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Myranda Rowland singled and then junior Shelby Stephens grounded a ball to third base. After fielding the ground ball, the throw from Allyson Hajnosz sailed over the second baseman's head and allowed Rowland to score.

NDC took a 3-0 lead after Stephens doubled to center field, scoring Rowland and senior Amy Hoover, in the fifth inning.

Lake Erie came storming back in the sixth inning. With runners on first and third, Hajnosz doubled to the right-center field gap. The ball rolled past the center fielder, Hoover, allowing both runners to score. Hajnosz went to third on the error and then scored following a bad relay throw from the second baseman, Stephens, tying the game at three.

The Storm then won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Kaitlyn Peacock hit an RBI triple to right field.

The top three hitters in the LEC order had a hit and scored a run. The pitcher, Ashley Brown (5-5), threw seven innings and allowed three runs, two earned, and got the win.

For Notre Dame, Stephens tallied three hits while freshman McKenzie Zigmont (7-7) pitched 6 2/3 strong innings, but took the loss. She allowed only one earned run.

In game two, NDC was the home team. In the bottom of the first inning with two outs, sophomore Ariel Linberger doubled to right field, scoring Hoover. Two batters later, sophomore Alyssa Larson singled to score Linberger.

Lake Erie quickly tied the game at two, after a run scored on a double play and Kristin Peacock doubled to right field for an RBI, in the second inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, LEC grabbed the lead on a sacrifice bunt, allowing Arial Birtley to score. Jennifer Doershuk hit an RBI ground-rule double in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on second and third base, junior Samantha Flowers hit a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the deficit to one run, 4-3.

And then in bottom of the seventh, junior Halli Swiger singled for Notre Dame. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then went to third on a groundout to third base. With two outs, Swiger scored and tied the game, on a passed ball. Junior Erin Calhoun pinch-hit for Stephens and reached on an error by shortstop Kaitlyn Peacock. Linberger singled through the left side of the infield, setting up an opportunity for the sophomore Taylor Olson. Olson knocked an RBI double that landed just inside the right field line.

For Notre Dame, Linberger went 4-for-4, Olson went 3-for-4 and Larson went 2-for-3, at the plate. In the pitcher's circle, Olson (7-14) picked up the win after going seven innings, allowing four runs.

For Lake Erie, Allyson Deemer (5-7) got the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, over 6 2/3 innings.

Notre Dame will play the University of Virginia's College at Wise on April 21. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
