Offensive battle goes to No. 11 Mercyhurst

AVON, Ohio - The weather was chilly, but the bats were hot on Tuesday afternoon as the Notre Dame College baseball team hosted No. 11 Mercyhurst. The Lakers won 15-7 as the teams combined for 22 runs and 22 hits.

In the first inning, things opened up for both teams as Mercyhurst was able to score three right away followed by two runs from the Falcons. The Lakers went on to score three in the second as well and two in the third to take an 8-2 lead.

Jacob Carpenter hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to get NDC back on the board. Carpenter ended the day with three hits to lead the team along with Ricky Phillips. Phillips drove in two runs and scored another.

Mercyhurst finished strong, scoring in each of the final four innings, which included a four-run performance in the eighth.

Notre Dame also had big eighth innings, scoring three runs, and scored in the ninth as well, but it wasn't enough to get out from behind the visitor's lead. Zach Santoro hit a two-RBI single in the eighth on his second hit of the day.

The Falcons utilized five pitchers who each struck out at least one batter. Todd Marshall led the team on the mound with three strikeouts in two innings.

Notre Dame will play a four-game series at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22. Both days' doubleheaders are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
