OBERLIN, Ohio – A big second half by Northern Michigan University led to a 20-8 win over Notre Dame College on Tuesday, in a game that was played at Oberlin College.
The first half was closely contested and saw response goals on both sides throughout the initial 30 minutes. In fact, within the first four minutes of the contest, both teams scored two goals.
Northern Michigan (1-2) then went on a 3-0 run, beginning with back-to-back goals by Ellie Bahr. And then, nearly 10 minutes passed before freshman
Abigail Plewes put the ball in the net for Notre Dame (1-2) to make the score 5-3.
The Wildcats scored their final goal of the first half with 10:23 remaining. Down 6-3, the Falcons played good defense and used goals by freshman
Selena Carter and sophomore
Victoria Martin to cut the deficit to one goal, 6-5, before halftime.
NMU scored the first four goals of the second half. Sophomore
Blaike Windsor stopped the Wildcats' momentum with a goal at the 20:16-mark following an assist by junior
Taylor Henderson.
After NDC scored back-to-back goals with about 11 minutes to go in the game to make the score 12-8, Northern Michigan scored the final eight goals of the game.
"We did some good things today and the goal is to keep evolving and get better. We're young and we just have to trust the process," said head coach
Pam Jenkins.
Carter scored three goals for NDC and Elsenbeck scored two. Carter also had eight caused turnovers and three draw controls. Freshman
Morgan Belting recorded five saves in goal. The Falcons took 29 shots and went 11-for-12 on clear attempts.
Bahr, Emily Dvorak and Graison Ringlever all had five goals for the Wildcats. Dvorak also earned 11 draw controls. NMU went 4-for-6 from free position shots and grabbed 18 ground balls.
Notre Dame will travel to Kalamazoo College on March 11. That game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
