KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Notre Dame College hung on to beat Kalamazoo College 13-12 on Sunday afternoon, after Kalamazoo's shot with one second remaining was no good.
The Falcons started strong and were aggressive, getting the ball down the field quickly after gaining possession. Freshman
Selena Carter scored the first goal of the game, less than three minutes into the contest.
After Kalamazoo tied the game at one, the Falcons used back-to-back goals from freshman
Bridie Schmalz and freshman
Abigail Plewes to take a 3-1 advantage with 20:44 remaining.
In the final 15:21 of the half, NDC went on a 6-3 run. Both Plewes and Carter scored two goals during the run.
NDC led 9-5 at the halftime break. The nine goals scored were the most that the Falcons have scored in the first half since last season, when they scored 17 goals on March 29.
Carter and Plewes each scored three goals and Carter added two assists.
Taylor Henderson had two goals for NDC in the first half.
Morgan Belting had four saves in goal. For Kalamazoo, Rachel Madar scored two goals.
The Hornets came out of the halftime break and went right at the Falcons. Madar scored the first two goals of the half to make the score 9-7.
After Notre Dame scored two goals to go up by four, Kalamazoo put four consecutive goals in the net, including two by Madar, to tie the game at 11.
Both teams scored one more goal, before NDC hit the game winner with 6:22 remaining. Sophomore
Victoria Martin scored her first goal of the game.
Notre Dame forced a turnover with less than four minutes remaining and held the possession until about the one minute mark.
The Hornets got the ball back and Madar took a shot in the final seconds that hit the post.
Carter scored four goals while Plewes and junior
Taylor Henderson each scored three goals. The Falcons had four assists in the game and caused 10 turnovers. Freshman
Morgan Belting recorded six saves.
Madar had six goals for KC and Amanda Moss caused six turnovers. The Hornets went 11-for-12 on clears.
"We grew today as a unit and I'm happy that we battled and came away with the win. It's a step in the right direction and I'm proud that we didn't give up," said head coach
Pam Jenkins.
The Falcons will travel to Walsh University to play on March 14. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
