BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - After a 7-2 loss to Glenville State on Friday, the Notre Dame College baseball team won its next three games, including one of the Pioneers and a doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan.
With the first loss behind them, the Falcons opened up game two at GSC by scoring the first three runs of the inning.
Adam Purdy put his team on the board in the first inning, scoring off wild pitch before hitting a two-run homer in the third inning to make it 3-0. The Pioneers scored one in the fourth inning, but NDC increased its lead with another long ball, this time from
Jacob Carpenter who brought in himself and another in the seventh inning.
It was 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, which would have been the final inning had Glenville State not pushed itself back into the game. GSC recorded three RBIs on a walk, a single and a double to tie things up 5-5 and force extra innings. Notre Dame bounced back right away, however.
Lukas Thompson got on base after being walked and stole second to put himself in scoring position.
Nick Farrell batted Thompson in with a single to center field for the go-ahead run as the Falcons won 6-5.
Todd Marshall (2-1) was credited with the win after facing the Pioneers in the final two innings.
Chris Murphy, who started the game, threw six innings and allowed just two runs. Both pitchers struck out four batters.
On Saturday, game one against Wesleyan was a pitching duel as
Josh Armbruster and Hunter Rotarius faced off. Armbruster was the first to give up a run after the Bobcats scored in the second inning, but he would outlast his counterpart. Purdy hit his second home run on the weekend to tie things up 1-1 after three. The tie wouldn't last long, though, after
Leo Wells singled to third base to bring in
Robert Williams to go up 2-1.
Armbruster held that score through the rest of the game to win his first game of the season.
Notre Dame used that momentum in game two to win 17-0 in the team's largest shutout victory since joining the NCAA. The 17-run victory is also the second-largest victory in that span, just one run shy of the 22-4 win at Glenville State in 2016.
Responsible for the shutout were pitchers
Kenny Pierson and
Kevin Guzik. Pierson went six innings in his second start of the season to stay undefeated at 2-0 and drop his ERA below 2.0. Guzik faced four batters and struck out three in the last inning of the game.
On the offensive end, eight different batters recorded an RBI with five recording multiple RBIs. Five batters also tallied multiple hits as Farrell and
Austin Barnhart led the team with three hits apiece. Farrell also led the team with three RBIs.
Ryan Kosmynka hit his first home run as a Falcon in the third inning.
Purdy highlighted the weekend with seven hits, six runs, three RBIs, two home runs and three stolen bases.
Notre Dame will look to continue its winning streak at Walsh on Wednesday, April 4, after the doubleheader was moved due to weather. The games are scheduled to begin at 2 and 4 p.m.
