AVON, Ohio – After a tough loss in game one, the Notre Dame College baseball team bounced back to earn a win in one of its most complete games of the season against Concord.
The Falcons went up 5-1 in the fifth inning of the first game, scoring all five runs in the bottom of the fifth. A three-RBI single from
Bret Davies on his first hit of the season highlighted the scoring. Davies would later score a run as well.
Carrying their four-run lead into the seventh and final inning, NDC looked like it would hand the Mountain Lions their first conference loss of the season. Concord had other plans.
The visitors would score 10 runs in the last inning to steal an 11-5 win and stay unbeaten in the MEC. CU's undefeated run would only last a few more hours as Notre Dame would rebound and win game two.
NDC was first on the board in the second game, going up 1-0 in the second inning after
Drake May brought in
Nick Farrell. Concord would respond in their next at bat, taking a 2-1 lead in the third.
The Falcons would then go on to score 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Farrell would begin the scoring frenzy in the fourth inning, bringing in
Ricky Phillips to tie things up. May would then again help Farrell score on a ground-rule double to give NDC its lead back.
May also brought in two of the six runs scored in the fifth inning and finish the game with four RBIs on two hits.
"I was just trying to stay composed [in the batter's box]," May said. "Early in the first game I was kind of getting aggressive out front, but in the second game I wanted to stay relaxed."
May, joined by Davies,
Adam Purdy, and
Ricky Phillips who all recorded multiple hits, helped
Kenny Pierson earn his first win of the season in his first start.
Pierson excelled in relief earlier this year and pitched a complete game against Concord, striking out six batters in seven innings.
"I was hurt while we were in Florida, so I've been itching to get back," Pierson said. "When I heard I was starting, I was really pumped and knew we could do it as a team. It was a nice team win today."
"We've had a couple guys that have been struggling in starts and Kenny's been pitching well this year," said head coach
Len Barker. "He deserved to get out there and do it and that's what he did. He pitched a great game to get us the win. Ultimately, it was a team win and everyone had fun and enjoyed it."
Barker was proud of the way his team bounced back against a Concord unit that had won 13 of its last 16 games.
"They could've laid down really easy after the way things went in the first game, but they came back and put it on them," Barker said. "It was a tight game early, and then we started to score some runs and had fun with it."
The win marks the first conference victory of the season for NDC, but the Falcons have been tough opponents in the MEC as they have led in seven of their eight games so far.
"[Concord is] one of the top teams in the conference so hopefully this will be a turning point for us," Pierson said.
Notre Dame will visit Walsh on Wednesday, March 28, for a doubleheader set to begin at 2 p.m.
