Notre Dame's strong second half comeback falls short against Lourdes

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College put together a long scoring run in the second half, connecting on seven of the final eight goals in the game. However, the comeback came up just short as they fell by a score of 13-9 against Lourdes University, on Thursday afternoon.

Within the first five minutes of the game, Lourdes (5-2) and Notre Dame (2-4) each scored a goal. Alyssa Long put the ball in the back of the net at the 27:50-mark and then junior Taylor Henderson tied the game up with a goal at the 26:38-mark.

Lourdes then scored the next four goals of the game to go up 5-1 with 20:49 remaining in the half.

The last goal scored by NDC in the first half came with just under 20 minutes remaining. Henderson scored that goal, as well.

Neither team scored in the final 13:21 of the half, coming up empty as both teams went up and down the field. Lourdes led 6-2 at halftime.

LU came out strong to begin the second half, scoring the first six goals to take a 12-2 advantage. Long scored the first three goals and she assisted on two.

Notre Dame then flipped the switch and they were able to get better looks at the goal. They scored the next three goals, prompting a timeout from the Gray Wolves. Two of the three goals came on free position shots.

After Hannah Cullis scored a goal with 12:33 remaining, the Falcons continued to go to work. Freshman Selena Carter scored a goal and about 40 seconds later, Long was given her second yellow card in the game, resulting in an ejection, continuing the swing of momentum for Notre Dame.

NDC put three more goals on the scoreboard but neither opponent could score in the final five minutes.

"Today we made a big step forward as a team," said head coach Pam Jenkins. "I am proud of the way we battled and didn't give up. Now the next goal for this young squad is to play a full 60 minutes and today we saw a glimpse of what that will look like."

After scoring only two goals in the first half, Notre Dame scored seven in the second stanza. Carter had four goals and three draw controls. Henderson had the two goals in the first half. Senior Bailey Reardon had five caused turnovers and sophomore Victoria Martin added seven draw controls.

For Lourdes, Long scored six goals and assists on three goals. She also won five draw controls. Cullis added three goals. The Gray Wolves took 26 shots and went 14-for-18 on clear attempts.

The Falcons will now travel to play No. 16 Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pa. on March 24. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
