Falcons see tough competition and extra innings in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS - The Notre Dame College baseball team went 1-2 at the University of Indianapolis over the weekend with a win against the hosts and two losses to No. 13 Quincy.

In their Friday contest, the Falcons had multiple 2018 firsts. Down 1-0, Zach Santoro hit NDC's first homerun of the season in the third inning to bring in himself and Drake May and gain a 2-1 lead. After the Greyhounds tied things up in the bottom of the third, May hit an RBI single to center field to put the team back up 3-2 in the fourth inning. Once again, the teams found themselves in a tie after Indianapolis scored in the fifth, and the game stayed tied 3-3 through the next four inning to force the first extra innings of the season for Notre Dame.

After a scoreless 10th, Lukas Thompson was up to bat with two runners on base. A single up the middle brought in Naja Garcia to put the Falcons up 4-3. Todd Marshall closed things out in the bottom of the 11th inning to earn his first win of the season. Marshall replaced Josh Armbruster in the seventh inning and stayed on the mound through the end of the game to pitch five scoreless innings.

In three game appearances this season, Marshall has held opponents scoreless in 8.1 innings. He has only allowed four hits while striking out seven batters, including five against UIndy.

Notre Dame once again saw extra innings in its game the next day against the ranked Quincy Hawks. Things were held scoreless through the first seven innings, largely due to starting pitcher Tyler Gault who saw his team through six. The sophomore allowed just two hits and struck out five batters in his second start of the season to improve his 2018 ERA to 0.75.

In the eighth inning, NDC broke through to get a 2-0 lead after Ryan Kozmynka hit an RBI and later scored on an error from Quincy's catcher. In the bottom of the ninth, a two-run homer tied things up to send the team into the 10th inning. The offenses once again weren't able to get anything on the scoreboard until the 12th.

Robert Williams hit a sacrifice fly to send in Santoro and put the Falcons up 3-2, but Quincy responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to win 4-3.

In Sunday's contest, the Hawks showed why they're a top 15 team with an 18-0 victory that ended after seven innings.

Notre Dame will compete in eight games at the Russmatt Invitational in Florida from March 4 through March 10.
