Notre Dame grabs a win on Senior Night

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Senior Day in the Murphy Gymnasium, Notre Dame College outscored Urbana University by 16 points in the second half, grabbing the lead and winning the game 83-74 on Saturday night.

Before the game, seniors Kyauta Taylor, Oliver Megins, Aaron Beidleman and Ethan Ching were honored for their work while a part of the program.

The Falcons (6-22, 4-18 MEC) took their largest lead of the first half following an 8-0 run. Beginning at the 9:02 mark in the first half, the Falcons had two free throws from freshman Levi Frankland and then a three pointer from redshirt-junior Angelo Cugini, followed by a three pointer from redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry. This gave the Falcons a 25-19 lead with 7:51 to go.

Malik Jacobs hit a three pointer for Urbana with 4:38 remaining and took a 28-27 lead over the Falcons. The Blue Knights (4-24, 3-19 MEC) ended up going on an 11-0 offensive run which put them ahead of Notre Dame by seven points, 34-27 with three minutes remaining.

UU continued to build their lead and increased it to nine points with just under two minutes remaining before halftime. They went into the break leading NDC by a score of 38-31.

Jacobs and Aarmanni Garnett each had nine points in the half for Urbana. Taylor added eight points for the Falcons.

Notre Dame was unable to retake the lead until Scarberry knocked down back-to-back three pointers to boost the Falcons ahead by a score of 52-48 with 13:52 remaining.

"We finally got the ball inside to Angelo [Cugini].That changed the game in the second half," head coach Tim Koenig said. "We did it a little bit in the first half, but we did it consistently in the second half. Urbana then switched to zone and then you saw Scarberry go off. By getting the ball inside to Angelo, and letting him touch it, he didn't always score it, but you saw that he kicked it opposite to Scarberry to score it, he hit Beidleman for a shot, he found Ollie a couple times inside. He found shooters. Ollie dumped it high to low. By getting it into the higher low post, we executed exactly what we were trying to do."

From that point on, Notre Dame did not relinquish the lead. They increased it to nine points as Beidleman knocked down a jumper with 32-seconds remaining.

In his first start of the season, and his career, Beidleman totaled 15 points, all in the second half, and five rebounds.

"It was an amazing feeling and I just wanted to leave it all out there on the floor in the last game, but most importantly, get a win," the senior said. "It really wasn't about myself, our team played amazing defense and we executed down the stretch."

"Aaron took care of the ball, got it to the right people and then scored a little bit at the end of the game," said Koenig. "How about Aaron Beidleman?"

NDC outscored Urbana 52-36 in the second half, and it all started on the defensive end.

"They turned the ball over 18 times, that's got to be the top amount of turnovers that we've forced," said Koenig. "We were very good defensively. KT [Taylor] was absolutely great at the top of the zone. I can't say enough about how good he was defensively. The other four guys were good and played well, but it started with KT defensively."

The 18 turnovers were the most by an NDC opponent this season and the Falcons also had a season-high in takeaways with 13 steals.

Jacobs had 15 points and six rebounds while shooting 60-percent from the floor and 2-for-2 from three point range for UU. Chris Jackson had 13 points off of the bench. The Blue Knights shot 53-percent from the floor.

Scarberry scored 23 points in the second half including going 7-for-10 from behind the three point arc. He finished with 26 points and eight threes.

"In the first half, I struggled a little bit, couldn't find the touch," he said. "But I have to say, my teammates kept coming at me, they kept hitting me when I was open. My shots finally started to fall in the second half and we made a run. Our seniors did a heck of a job, Aaron Beidleman did a great job. We just wanted to go out playing, having fun and leaving it all out there for our seniors. It was great to send them out with a win."

Cugini added 17 points and five rebounds and Taylor added 10 points and five assists. Megins finished with seven points, nine rebounds and seven assists. NDC shot 65-percent from the field in the second stanza and ended the game shooting 56-percent from the floor, 48-percent from three and 81-percent from the free throw line.

"It was a good win for us and it feels good finally getting a win," Taylor mentioned. "My career has been fun. It's been a fun four years playing here. I got to 1900 career points and I hope I play professional basketball somewhere."

"It was a good game, I think we really brought it in that second half," Megins explained. "I remember going out after the half and said, 'let's play so well that they don't take us out' and they didn't for the whole half. Aaron Beidleman really turned it up and played really well and Drew [Scarberry] caught fire. It's easier to play with guys who make me look good and make everyone else look good. But it has been an absolute pleasure to play at NDC. I can't put into words how much the coaches, and this school, have done for me. It's been awesome. This has been one of the best experiences of my life."

"I'm just so proud of the guys," Koenig said, with a smile. "A guy like Aaron [Beidleman], doing so well in school and has such a great internship and is going to have a great job. He's got a great attitude. He's had a chance to play a little bit, but had a chance today to play big minutes and played great. But he's just a great guy. KT [Taylor] has had a great career and he's doing well in school. He's one of the best players to ever play here. Again, KT is just a great guy. Ollie [Megins] has gotten hurt throughout his career. From that standpoint it's been tough but he's had a really good career and academically, he's doing really well. He's going to student-teach in the fall. He's just a great guy. Ethan [Ching] is doing really well academically, he practices his behind off and did really well on the JV team. But all four of these guys, you just want to be around. They have developed into great young men and will represent our program, our school and their families well."
