Game Recap: Baseball |

Notre Dame splits on first day of competition

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – In its opening day, the Notre Dame College baseball team went 1-1 with a 10-2 win against Davis & Elkins to bounce back from the early 6-3 loss to the host team Tusculum.

In their first game, the Falcons got off to a good start against Tusculum as they went up 2-0 in the first inning. Transfer Drake May scored the first run of the season on a wild pitch before Nate Rearick batted in Zach Santoro.

After the Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the first, NDC kept things going with a run of its own in the second. Adam Purdy flied out to center field for a sacrifice hit that brought in Ryan Kozmynka and go up 3-1.

The momentum shifted on a single play in the third inning as a Tusculum single and Notre Dame error sent in three runs. The Pioneers were up 4-3 with six innings to go. Both teams failed to scored again until a double in the sixth inning brought in two runners for the home team to put them up 6-3. That score held until the ninth inning as Tusculum completed its comeback.

In game two, things got off to another strong start for the Falcons. NDC went up 4-0 in the first inning as four different players batted in a run.

Davis & Elkins got a run back in the second inning, but it was the only run Tyler Gault gave up in his win. Gault went six innings, giving up just three hits while striking out four batters.

Notre Dame scored again in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 8-1. In the ninth, with runners on second and third, Robert Williams came in to pinch hit and brought in both players on base with a triple to right center.

Newcomers May, Kozmynka and Naja Garcia made their presence felt as each brought in at least one run in their first starts for NDC. May scored three runs while Kosmynka batted .500 with three hits.

Returning junior Santoro packed the box score as well on day one with three runs and two RBIs on four hits.

Notre Dame will play both teams again tomorrow, February 19, starting with Davis & Elkins at 11 a.m. The Falcons will finish their trip with a 2:30 p.m. game against Tusculum.
