Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Jacob Bunner

Bench comes up big in first home win of the season

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Behind 15 three pointers and 25 bench points, Notre Dame College was able to put together a complete team victory against West Virginia State University, by a score of 95-84, on Wednesday night.

At the 15:31-mark in the first half, West Virginia State led by seven points. Drew Scarberry, who came off the bench, was a big reason why the Falcons not only caught up, but also took the lead.

The Falcons redshirt-junior knocked down back-to-back threes, giving Notre Dame a 17-15 lead. He then capped his own 8-2 run with two free throws, giving NDC a 19-17 advantage, with 9:48 remaining.

"Not everyone sees Scarberry putting time in," head coach Tim Koenig said. "We keep telling him the results are going to come, just stay the course. And we're really proud of him."

The long ball then became the Falcons' best friend. After the Yellow Jackets took the lead back, Larenz Thurman knocked down a three pointer, Will Vorhees split a pair of free throws and then Bruce Hodges III connected on threes in back-to-back possessions.

The next three Notre Dame possessions, from 6:44 to 4:40, resulted in a made three pointer, layup, three pointer and three pointer. Notre Dame stretched their lead to nine points, 40-31.

At the halftime break, NDC led 48-41. Both teams shot around 50-percent from the field and 45-percent from three point range in the first half. Thurman had 12 points on four three pointers for NDC. Pat Johnson-Agwu had 14 points and Glen Abram added 13 points and three, threes for WVSU.

Early in the second half, Vorhees made a layup, which gave the Falcons an 11 point lead at 63-52, with 15 minutes to go in the game.

With just under 10 minutes left, the hoop looked like it was the size of the ocean for the Falcons and Scarberry took advantage, knocking down two straight jumpers from behind the three point line. NDC led by 16 points, 75-59, with 8:45 remaining.

Two minutes later, West Virginia State had gone on a short run to cut their deficit to single digits, but Hodges put a halt to the Yellow Jackets momentum with his own three pointer. Although he had 11 points and went 3-for-3 from three, Koenig said Hodges' defense shown through again tonight.

"Today, Bruce got more opportunities to shoot the ball, but his job has been to defend," he said. "Bruce guarded (Glen) Abram for much of the second half and did a great job."

A layup by Johnson-Agwu with 5:53 remaining cut the Notre Dame lead to six points, but that would be as close as West Virginia State would get. NDC closed out the game on a 17-12 run and Thurman scored or assisted on 9 of the Falcons final 13 points. He finished with 23 points and 10 assists, his first double-double of the season.

"A really good team win," said Koenig. "Obviously, they're (WVSU) a good basketball team and they've had a lot of close games this year. But the players make plays, they get it done. We say some things from time to time, but the credit goes to them."

Both teams shot very well, as the Yellow Jackets shot 51-percent from the field and 50-percent from three point range. Notre Dame shot 49-percent, overall, and 46-percent from three point range.

"Our Achilles' Heel this season has been the three point shot," the coach mentioned. "We've shot a low percentage, but today we shot it really well, which was a major difference in the game. We had a lot of good looks… If they're there we want guys to shoot, let it fly."

The Falcons received another double-double from Vorhees who had 22 points and 12 rebounds. He also made nine free throws. Scarberry had 14 points off the bench and connected on four three pointers in 14 minutes on the floor. The bench scored 25 points.

"We knew it was a matter of time and we try to stay positive," Koenig mentioned. "Stay the course and it will come. We tell guys up and down the roster, your time will come and the results will come."

Johnson-Agwu finished the game 31 points and nine rebounds for West Virginia State. He also made nine free throws. Abram knocked down five three pointers and had 21 points.

The Falcons will travel to play the University of Charleston on December 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
