ATHENS, W.Va. – Notre Dame College put together a total second half effort on Saturday, with 43 points and seven steals, to beat Concord University, 80-69, in a comeback effort.
The Falcons got off to a hot start and pushed their lead to 16-10 after both senior
Will Vorhees and sophomore
Halil Parks hit a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions. Parks had seven of NDC's initial 16 points.
After falling down by six, Concord got unbelievably hot from behind the three point arc. The Mountain Lions knocked down five consecutive three pointers to grab a 25-18 lead. Then, about two minutes after Tommy Bolte nailed two free throws, Trey Brisco hit a three pointer to put CU up, 30-20.
With 8:30 remaining in the first half, Notre Dame came all the way back. Freshman
Isaiah Sanders made a layup and Vorhees knocked down a three pointer, following a miss by Concord. On the following NDC possession, Sanders hit a three pointer, which made the score 30-28, in favor of the Mountain Lions. However, the 8-0 run caused CU to take a timeout.
Following the timeout, Concord missed back-to-back shots and freshman
Larenz Thurman hit a three, with 6:27 to go, giving NDC their first lead since the 12:34-mark.
Concord found their range again and hit four more triples before halftime. They closed the half on a 14-6 run and led 44-37.
To start the second half, the Mountain Lions immediately went ahead by 10 points. Notre Dame would work themselves back into the contest, but did not retake the lead until Thurman hit a three pointer with 11:28 remaining in the game, giving NDC a 57-55 advantage.
From that point, the Falcons' defense really stepped up. Over the next four minutes, Notre Dame's offense put together a 10-1 run and the defense had three steals in that time. Thurman finished a three point play at the free throw line and gave the Falcons a 67-56 lead with 6:59 remaining.
NDC continued to push their lead and Sanders helped out with six points in the final five minutes of the game. The Falcons increased the difference to 14 points, 77-63, with 1:15 to go in the contest. NDC would go on to win, 80-69.
Vorhees, Sanders and Thurman combined for six of NDC's seven second half steals. As a team, Notre Dame scored 30 points in the paint and 24 points off turnovers. Vorhees scored 15 of his 28 points in the second half and the Falcons' forward also blocked three shots and went 8-for-9 at the free throw line.
Thurman played in his first game of the season, after coming back from injury, and shot 50-percent from the field, for 21 points. Sanders scored 15 points on eight shots and grabbed seven boards. Parks recorded 11 points and eight rebounds.
For Concord, Jair Rodgers scored 18 points and made six three pointers in the first half, but went cold in the second half, missing both three pointers and scoring just five points. Bolte had 20 points, six assists, five rebounds but also recorded nine turnovers. Brisco added 11 points and eight rebounds. CU shot 1-for-12 from three point range in the second half.
Notre Dame will travel to the University of Virginia's College at Wise on November 19. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
