FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Notre Dame College showed composure throughout their comeback against California University of Pennsylvania, as they held the Vulcans to 25 second half points, in a 73-61 victory, on Saturday evening.
California came out firing away as they scored the first six points of the ballgame. NDC, on the other hand, struggled to get going, missing their first five shots. The only points scored by Notre Dame in the first 12 minutes came from a jumper by senior
Will Vorhees.
At the 9:44-mark in the first half, Brent Pegram sunk two free throws to give Cal Pa. a 16 point advantage, leading by a score of 21-5.
Then, NDC used the three point shot to get right back into the contest. A massive 20-7 run by the Falcons was aided by three pointers from sophomore
Halil Parks, senior
Angelo Cugini and Vorhees. With 3:21 remaining, the Vulcans led 28-25.
Cal went into the halftime break, leading 36-30. However, after 20 minutes of play, the Falcons were shooting 31-percent from the floor, mainly because of their tough start. The Vulcans were not shooting much better, sitting at 38-percent, overall, and 36-percent from behind the three point line.
NDC came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders. Parks stole the ball and laid it up on the other end on a fast break. Freshman
Isaiah Sanders was then fouled and made both free throws to cut the Falcons' deficit to two points, 36-34, less than two minutes into the second half.
With about 15 minutes remaining, Vorhees knocked down two free throws and then the Falcons forced a Vulcan turnover by Pegram. Parks hit a three on the other end, giving NDC their first lead of the game at 42-40.
Cal Pa. would tie the game at 42, but remarkably, after the Falcons grabbed the lead right back with a Cugini layup and free throw, Notre Dame never gave the lead away again. They led for the final 12:58 of the game.
With just under two minutes remaining, Parks hit a three pointer and then 40 second later, Vorhees knocked down a free throw to give the Falcons their largest lead of the night, which was 17 points. The free throw also capped a 30-13 run, after the game was tied at 42.
The Falcons won the game by a score of 73-61 with the defense coming up big in the second half. Cal Pa. scored 25 points in the second half and the Falcons stole the ball four times, leading to eight points off of those turnovers. Parks totaled 14 points and two steals in the second stanza.
Parks led everyone in scoring tonight, with 26 on 9-of-18 shooting and 5-of-11 shooting from long range. Vorhees finished with another double-double as he had 16 points, on 50-percent shooting, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Sanders added 13 points and Cugini finished with 10 boards.
The Vulcans only played six players in the game and Pegram led the team with 17 points. Collin MacAdams hauled in nine rebounds, including five offensive boards. Cal. Pa. shot 34-percent in the second half, including 20-percent from three point land.
In four out of the last five season, Notre Dame has started the year with a 2-0 record.
The Falcons' next game will be their home opener against Roberts Wesleyan College on November 13. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
