SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – No. 15 Notre Dame College jumped out to a big first half lead as four different players scored a goal for the Falcons in the opening 45 minutes. NDC followed that up with a strong defensive second half in a 4-0 victory over Daemen College, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Falcons (10-2) struck first in the 21st minute on a corner kick, which has been such a pivotal part of their offensive game this season. Junior
Arthur Favero came through with a strong corner kick from the left side of the field that crossed in front of the goal and was headed by junior
Paolo Termine on the right side. After a few bounces off the turf, the ball sailed into the net off the foot of junior
Lewis Norvock, which turned out to be the game-winner.
About ten minutes later, a corner kick almost resulted in a goal from senior
David Perez Torralba, who had just checked into the contest, but the shot was high. One minute later, Favero scored his ninth goal of the season. After a pass from junior
Giulio Bellei, Favero was one-on-one with goalkeeper Philipp Schmidt and his shot snuck through Schmidt's legs in the 32nd minute.
Ahead 2-0, NDC went to work again with a goal from senior Joao Pedro Ribas De Oliveira just before the 36th minute. Ribas De Oliveira, who had just entered the game, worked the ball on the end line, toward the goal. He lifted a shot into the air and the ball tipped off of a defender's head. The spin on the ball allowed it to bounce around the post into the net.
The scoring continued into the 44th minute when Torralba did a nice job of working against a couple defenders while maintaining possession. Once he entered the left side of the box, he took a shot that tip-toed underneath of the diving Daemen goalkeeper, putting Notre Dame ahead 4-0, going into the half. Junior
Javier Mate was credited with the assist.
"In the first half, we got possession of the ball early and kept it well. I think we changed the point of attack well and kept Daemen off balance," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "That allowed us to create a lot of quality chances."
Neither team scored in the second half, but the Falcons kept Daemen (4-8) from taking a shot. In fact, the Wildcats did not take a shot over the entire 90 minutes and they only had one corner kick.
"Defensively, we just kept good shape and stuck to our basics first principles," Nolan mentioned.
NDC now has nine shutouts on the season and they are allowing, on average, 0.58 goals-per-game. Favero now has nine goals and six assists, leading the team in both categories.
For DC, Schmidt made five saves but allowed the four goals. Jarrett Lecceadone played the final 24 minutes in goal and recorded two saves.
The Falcons will now head to West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va. on October 14. The game will kickoff at 1 p.m.
