BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – No. 13 Notre Dame College matches their 2017 overall win total (11) and conference win total (8), with a 4-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College, on Sunday afternoon.
Notre Dame (11-2, 8-2 MEC) fell behind early, as an opponent scored first against the Falcons for just the second time this season. In the 12th minute, Matthew Bentley scored his fourth goal of the year, for West Virginia Wesleyan (2-9-2, 2-9 MEC).
"I was pleased with how we reacted to the goal we conceded," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "I feel it woke us up. We started to get on the ball more and compete physically."
NDC jumped on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute when junior
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque stole the ball from the Bobcats and dribbled just outside the box. He found a gap in the defense and shot it from about 18-yards out that fooled the goalkeeper, who dove the wrong way and the ball rolled into the net.
Four minutes later, a perfectly placed pass from junior
Paolo Termine, who was behind midfield, landed in front of a sprinting freshman
Nicholas Felician, who was in front of a defender. Felician took the ball off the pass and knocked it under a diving goalkeeper to put the Falcons on top, 2-0.
Another steal set up the third NDC goal of the first half. In the 38th minute, junior
Arthur Favero set up Felician with a pass into the penalty box and Felician snuck the ball past the goal keeper, again. Felician now has two multi-goal games this season.
Notre Dame went into halftime leading 3-1, and their fourth goal came in the second half. In the 78th minute, junior
Giulio Bellei passed the ball across the field to sophomore
Varis Singh Khera who then kicked the ball to the middle of the field, with nice touch. Favero took the pass and almost immediately dotted the upper right corner of the goal, for his 10th goal of the season.
Between the 86th minute and the 88th minute, the Bobcats had chances to score. First, Zach Whiting had a header that was saved by NDC goalkeeper junior
Daniele De Angelis. Then, a corner kick led to a shot by Bentley, who missed wide to the left.
De Angelis finished with three saves while WVWC had Alex Rittenhouse (one save, three goals allowed) in goal for the first half and then Sahil Dhunnookchand (five saves, one goal allowed) took over in the second.
Notre Dame will now come home to play Shepherd University on October 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
