NDC steps up late to earn the sweep; Jokubauskaite breaks records

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College puts together three impressive sets, including a final hit percentage of .279 and a third set comeback, to defeat Concord University, 3-0, on Friday evening. Sophomore Roberta Jokubauskaite broke two single game records, in blocks, with her performance.

Notre Dame (8-10, 2-3 MEC) started strong in the first set and had a hit percentage of .361 to Concord's .171. NDC started to pull ahead when they went on a 4-1 run and grabbed a 12-8 lead. NDC only trailed twice in the set and won 25-20.

"Whenever you're hitting over .250 as a team, you're going to win a lot of matches," head coach Travis Hinkle mentioned. "When you control your side of the net and you can get free balls and you can get three options, your attack percentages are going to go up because of the options. That's something that we're going to build on, especially with having a lot of home matches in this gym, coming up. That's something we're looking to build on every game."

In the second set, the Falcons grabbed the lead and did not trail. In the middle of the set, Notre Dame scored six consecutive points and had a 15-5 lead. NDC took advantage of three attack errors by Concord during that 6-0 run. Notre Dame went on to win, 25-19.

The third set was a battle between the two teams. Notre Dame took a 13-9 lead, but Concord scored nine of the next 12 points and led the set by a score of 18-16. Later in the set, down 23-19, Notre Dame turned the set around. Junior Mary Kate McHugh stepped up and had four kills during a 7-1 run to close out the set and win, 26-24.

"I think that we were connecting when we needed to, especially in that third set," McHugh said. "We were down by a couple points and I knew that we needed a switch of momentum, so I was calling for the ball and we just clicked and then we went on our run."

"It's always nice to get the first home win of the season," Hinkle said. "We had different players step up… We served well and we only had four aces but we did a great job keeping them out of system, which gave us chances to get free balls and get options for our hitters. We blocked extremely well."

McHugh led the team with 15 kills, including nine in the third set. She also had a hit percentage of .536, which ranks ninth in program history for a single contest. The junior recorded 10 digs, with four, each, coming in the first and second set. She already has 10 double-doubles in kills and digs, this season. McHugh has worked hard to improve her play on the defensive side, as she has been asked to do more.

"I knew what I struggled with so that's what I focused on," she said. "And I came in with goals and working toward achieving those goals really helped me to get there."

"Mary Kate did what we know Mary Kate does and that's what we expect out of her every game," Hinkle said. "She's a big reason why we finished off those sets."

Jokubauskaite had an incredible performance, as well. She recorded nine block assists, which is a new single game NDC record. Her nine total blocks in a three set match is an NDC single game record and she placed herself in ninth place with nine total blocks in a game of any length.

"Roberta with nine blocks is fantastic because every day she brings more and more to her blocking game and without her block we wouldn't be as successful as we are," Hinkle said.

Freshman Lizzie Willis had 10 kills, junior Paige Staudacher added 26 assists and junior Alexandra Kaeberlein led the team with 17 digs.

Ellie Lawrence led the Mountain Lions (4-17, 1-5 MEC) with 10 kills while Erin Shannon led the team with 15 digs. Imani Rodgers had 15 assists.

"We're really working to finish games," Hinkle pointed out. "It started with Fairmont. We did a really good job of finishing in Fairmont. When we scrimmaged in practice this week, we were finishing well and today, we finished well, especially in that first set. In that third set, we were down five points and we got seven of the last eight points or eight of the last night points because of our serving runs with Erin (Daugherty) and Amelia (Kaeberlein). That's something that we struggled with in the beginning of the season. Now we're getting used to each other."

NDC will take on the University of Virginia's College at Wise, tomorrow, October 6. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
