WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – On Saturday, Notre Dame College wrapped up a game postponed from earlier this month against the University of Virginia's College at Wise. NDC wins the contest by a score of 3-1, pushing their winning streak to five games.
The teams took the floor in the third set, with the match tied 1-1 and the Falcons leading UVa-Wise, 21-14. The match began in South Euclid on October 6 and the teams squared off in West Liberty University to finish the game, today, before the Hilltoppers faced the Cavaliers.
To recap, NDC (16-13, 8-5 MEC) and UVa-Wise (5-22, 2-11 MEC) both put together long scoring runs against each other throughout the first set. In fact, the Cavs led 16-14 after a 3-0 run. NDC then scored six of the next eight points and they would go on to win, 25-23.
In the second set, Notre Dame pulled ahead 7-3, but the Cavaliers then went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead by two points. After the Falcons grabbed a 17-12 advantage, UVa-Wise came back, tying the game at 22 and then winning 25-23, to tie the match at one game apiece.
After taking a large lead in the third set, NDC finished the job today. Notre Dame won the third set by a score of 25-18.
To finish the contest, NDC pulled away with two separate runs in the fourth set. Trailing 8-7, Notre Dame scored four consecutive points to lead 11-8. And finally, with the set tied at 13, the Falcons went on an 8-1 run, which included six kills. NDC won the set, 25-17.
For the Falcons, junior
Mary Kate McHugh had 21 kills and 14 digs. She has now reached the 20 kill mark in seven of her last eight games. Freshmen
Lizzie Willis and
Katie Richardson each had 11 kills, but more impressively, they combined for eight aces. Richardson's five aces puts her in second place in program history in a four set match. The 13 combined team aces sets a new program record in a four set match. Junior
Paige Staudacher added 51 assists and junior
Alexandra Kaeberlein totaled 21 digs.
This is the longest winning streak that the NDC volleyball program has had since they put five wins together from September 3 through September 10 of 2016.
Brooke Abbott led the Cavaliers with 10 kills while Makayla Ledford recorded 33 assists. Madelyn Lawrence put together nine kills but also had a hit percentage of .389. Morgan Milligan added 28 digs.
Notre Dame will play their final home game of the campaign against Urbana University, on October 30. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
