Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Jacob Bunner

Men's soccer gets past Wheeling Jesuit with one goal

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After a defensive battle, No. 21 Notre Dame College struck for the first, and only, goal of the game when junior Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque scored his seventh goal of the season as NDC defeated Wheeling Jesuit University 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first half, Wheeling Jesuit took two shots on goal, while the Falcons only tested WJU's Josh Zimmerman a couple times. Early in the stanza, junior Arthur Favero put the ball into the net, but offside was called. And then, in the 35th minute, Joao Pedro Ribas de Oliveira booted the ball toward goal, but it hit the cross bar.

The Cardinals nearly pushed across a score in the 23rd and 24th minute. Between those two minutes, WJU took three shots, one shot-on-goal, along with a corner kick. They also had a header shot in the 28th minute, but junior Daniele De Angelis corralled the ball.

Notre Dame's first shot on goal came quickly in the second half, as senior David Perez Torralba nearly snuck a ball past Zimmerman.

A goal was scored in the 66th minute, when Torralba worked the ball into the box and took a shot that bounced off Zimmerman. While the Cardinals' goalkeeper was on the ground, Albuquerque knocked in his third game-winning goal of the season.

Following the goal, Wheeling Jesuit took six shots in the remaining time, but could not tie the game.

"I think the second half was a game of management, really," head coach Carl Nolan said. "We needed a goal and got one, and we also had to manage how strong and direct Wheeling Jesuit is. We did a good job of restricting them to long range shots and kept a decent shape defensively."

De Angelis finished the game with three saves and now has posted 11 shutouts this season. Zimmerman had two saves for Wheeling Jesuit.

With the win, the Falcons gathered three more points toward the Mountain East Conference standings. NDC has now clinched second place in the MEC with 30 points while the Cardinals are in third place with 24 points.

The Falcons will travel to play Urbana University on October 28. The contest will begin at 3:30 p.m.
