URBANA, Ohio – After playing Notre Dame College close on Mueller Field in September, Urbana University broke through with the first goal in today's game. However, the Falcons scored in the 73rd minute and then senior
David Perez Torralba scored the golden goal, a minute and-a-half into overtime, to give Notre Dame a 2-1 win, on Sunday.
In the first half, neither team scored but the teams traded shots. Urbana (8-6-3, 7-4-3 MEC) was on the attack in the 13th minute and in the matter of seven seconds, Jasminko Dizdarevic took two shots that junior
Daniele De Angelis had to save. NDC had four shots on goal in the half.
The Blue Knights scored almost immediately as the second half began. In the 46th minute, a throw-in entered the box and was headed once. The ball fell to the turf and Stan Roosken kicked the ball on a short bounce. Roosken's first goal of the season floated over De Angelis and gave UU a 1-0 lead.
NDC attacked Urbana's defense and took six shots between the 57th minute and 73rd minute. In the 73rd minute, senior
Joao Pedro Ribas de Oliveira took a shot that bounced off of the Blue Knight's goal keeper Jakob Henriksen. Junior
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque possessed the ball after the ricochet. Albuquerque then scored to tie the game at one.
Neither team scored in the final 17 minutes of regulation, so NDC went into an extra period for the third time in 2018 and for the second time in the past three games.
In overtime, the Falcons scored in the 91st minute when junior
Arthur Favero snuck a pass from the left side of the box to the right side, where senior
David Perez Torralba was standing by himself.
Torralba quickly took a shot that touched the back of the goal.
"The win allows us to keep good momentum going forward into the tournament," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "Urbana is a very difficult and well coached opponent. We were really pleased with our ability to not panic and come back from a goal down. It adds to our team experience."
Torralba now has five goals and two game-winners on the season while Favero has eight assists. Urbana's Henriksen allowed two goals, but gave the Blue Knights seven saves.
Notre Dame's 14 wins, overall, are the most since 2013, when NDC had 15 victories. The 11 conference wins ties the program record, since joining the Mountain East Conference.
The Falcons will host a semifinal game in the MEC Tournament against Wheeling Jesuit University, on October 31. The contest will begin at 1 p.m.
