No. 4 Charleston defeats No. 11 Notre Dame in OT

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – No. 4 University of Charleston and No. 11 Notre Dame College were tied at the 90 minute mark, but UC scored again in the 97th minute to take the 2-1 victory, on Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons (12-3, 9-3 MEC) had the first shot-on-goal as junior Arthur Favero put one on line that Charleston's Ewen Le Gallo saved.

In the 17th minute, a foul was called on Notre Dame for a push in the back. Because it took place in the box, Gabriel Cabral took the penalty kick, and nailed the upper right corner of the goal to put UC up, 1-0.

Favero had another chance to put Notre Dame on the scoreboard with a header in 26th minute that went wide.

Charleston (13-0-2, 11-0-1 MEC) took five shots and NDC took two, in the first half.

Notre Dame did not wait long to tie the game, in the second half. A strong free kick, just outside the box, was put in front of the goal with multiple players from both teams jumping up. Junior Lewis Norvock deflected the ball just enough to give NDC their first goal against the Golden Eagles, this season. Junior Giulio Bellei was credited with the assist.

That would be the only shot the Falcons took in the second half. UC shot twice, but neither team scored after Norvock's goal.

Notre Dame went to overtime for the second time this season, and in the 97th minute, the Golden Eagles' Christos Charalambous scored his first game winner of the season.

Junior Daniele De Angelis finished with two saves for NDC, while Le Gallo had one save. All saves by those goalkeepers were made in the first half.

Notre Dame will play Wheeling Jesuit University in their final home game of the season, on October 24. The game will begin at 12 p.m.
