Charleston defends home court against the Falcons

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – On Friday night, Notre Dame College traveled to play a tough conference matchup against the University of Charleston. The Golden Eagles came out strong and were able to take the match, 3-1.

Charleston (12-13, 7-3 MEC) came out of the gate quickly. They had three separate runs of five consecutive points, or more, and wrapped up the set with a 25-9 score.

NDC (11-13, 4-5 MEC) bounced back in the second set. The Falcons scored the first three points of the set, initiated by junior Mary Kate McHugh, who put down the first kill. The Falcons put some distance between themselves and UC with a 5-1 run that included a kill by sophomores Lauren Toman and Roberta Jokubauskaite and two kills from freshman Lizzie Willis. Notre Dame led, 9-5.

Charleston would tie the game at 10, but Notre Dame put together another run, this time it was a 9-2 offensive output, giving NDC a 19-12 advantage. They would coast to a 25-14 set win.

The third set was close, until the Golden Eagles scored five straight points to pull ahead, 16-11. They took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-21 set win.

UC then closed the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.

For the third consecutive match, McHugh recorded at least 20 kills, converting 20 tonight. She also had 14 digs. Junior Alexandra Kaeberlein added 17 digs and junior Riley Coleman had 15 digs. Junior Paige Staudacher finished with 34 assists.

For Charleston, Carly Granger led the team with 16 kills and 18 digs. Jour'Ney Powell added 11 kills and a hit percentage of .611. Chloe Massaro gave the Golden Eagles 47 assists. Janeese Vervelde led both teams with five blocks.

NDC will head over to Institute, W. Va. to play West Virginia State University, tomorrow. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
