The Falcons defeat Glenville State, win for third time this week

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Blocks and strong hit percentages led to Notre Dame College's third victory in four nights, sweeping Glenville State College 3-0, on Friday night.

Notre Dame (11-11, 4-3 MEC) had a hit percentage of .400 in the first set. Glenville State (5-11, 1-7 MEC) jumped out to a 6-2 advantage, which was the largest lead throughout the early part of the set. The Falcons then dominated after the Pioneers tied the contest at 12. Notre Dame went on a 13-1 run to close out the set with a 25-13 victory. Junior Mary Kate McHugh had five kills during the run.

In the second set, NDC scored nine of the final 10 points in the contest after trailing 19-16, at one point. During that run, freshman Katie Richardson recorded three kills. The Falcons won 25-20.

Notre Dame grabbed the lead at the beginning of the third set, and later expanded that lead to 15-8. Once again, GSC did not go away quietly, and went on a late 5-0 run to close the deficit to two points, 17-15. However, the Falcons hung on to win the set, 25-19, and complete the sweep.

NDC wraps up a long week of four road games, in which they went 3-1. Notre Dame also picked up their fifth road victory of the season, a feat that the Falcons did not reach until October 31 last season.

"It's always great to have four road matches in a short, busy week and pick up three wins," said head coach Travis Hinkle. "The biggest thing about playing on the road is to make it as efficient as possible, which means terminating the ball quickly, and we did a great job with that today. Mary Kate had a great matchup and that's why her kill total and hitting percentage was so high."

McHugh added 21 kills and a hit percentage of .340. Richardson had just seven kills but had an efficient .556 hit percentage. Junior Paige Staudacher recorded 37 assists and a season-high four blocks. Freshman Amelia Kaeberlein led the team with 11 digs and sophomore Roberta Jokubauskaite put down seven blocks, which ranks her tied for third in NDC for a three set match. The Falcons had 11 total blocks and used them to their advantage, as Glenville State came into the week leading the conference in blocks allowed at 2.71 per set.

"We used our scouting report to adjust to their tendencies to set a block to their favorite spots on the court and forced them to try to adjust," Hinkle said.

For GSC, Madison Gargus had 29 assists and Ai Miyazaki recorded 13 digs. The Pioneers did not have a player with double-digit kills and the team finished with a .067 hit percentage.

The Falcons will take on #20 Wheeling Jesuit University on October 6 in the Murphy Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
