SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Fairmont State University jumped out to a large lead before halftime and beat Notre Dame College 107-78, on Saturday afternoon.
The game was close early in the first half and Notre Dame (4-12, 2-8 MEC) took an 8-7 lead at the 13:50-mark with layup by redshirt-junior
Angelo Cugini.
Fairmont State (12-4, 8-2 MEC) then went on an 11-2 run, capped off by a three pointer by RJ Hutcherson with 11:56 remaining before halftime. The Fighting Falcons led 18-10.
NDC would then put together a run of their own, scoring six of the next eight points in the game, as both senior
Oliver Megins and redshirt-sophomore
Drew Scarberry knocked down a three pointer. This brought the deficit down to four points, 20-16, with 9:37 to go in the first half.
At the end of the first half, Andrew Emrick hit a jumper and FSU led by 15 points, 50-35.
Emrick had 17 points and Hutcherson added 10 points in the first half for FSU. The team shot 57-percent. Scarberry hit two, three pointers and had 12 points for NDC and Cugini grabbed eight rebounds.
After Fairmont State knocked down a three to start the second half, senior
Kyauta Taylor scored the next five points with a layup and a three pointer. With 19:04 remaining in the game, NDC trailed 53-40. That would be as close as the score would get the rest of the way.
"Fairmont State shot it really well and beat us up in transition," head coach
Tim Koenig said. "The turnovers that led to their runouts really hurt. It's hard to always play from behind. They made shots late and it really opened up and they put a hurt on us today. They played really well."
Taylor scored 12 points in the second half and finished with 19 points while Cugini scored 14 points and grabbed 14 boards. Megins recorded five points and had 10 rebounds. The Falcons had four players who scored in double-digits and the team shot 41-percent from the field. NDC outrebounded FSU 45-38.
Freshman
Levi Frankland got hurt on Thursday and did not play on Saturday. Koenig spoke about the players who stepped in and helped out with another player injured.
"We gave a lot more minutes to Jack (Kelsheimer) and Cole (Hayes) off the bench. Those guys played significantly more than they have played. Next guy up and we'll go from there."
Emrick finished the game with 27 points, shooting 67-percent (11-for-17) and had six rebounds for Fairmont State. Cole Von Handorf shot 6-for-7 from the field and had 15 points. Hutcherson scored 13 points and shot 56-percent (5-for-9). Fairmont State shot 53-percent, overall, and recorded 56 points in the paint.
The Falcons will play Wheeling Jesuit University on January 17. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
