SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In back-to-back games, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team scored two goals in the final ten minutes of a match. There was a little more pressure on Sunday, however, as the Falcons were tied 1-1 and faced overtime against Concord.
With goals by
Jackie Corrigan in the 82nd minute and
Lytia Hart in the 87th, NDC won the game 3-1 and improved to 5-0 on the season.
"I think we made it a little harder on ourselves by giving up that early goal," head coach
Mike Shiels said. "We had to fight our way back to get ourselves evened up with them. The players fought through it and got the result we wanted."
The Cougars were able to score in less than seven minutes after the start of the game, to go up and kept their attack going early. Eventually, things slowed for the CU offense and the Falcons took over with a goal by
Brooke LeForce at the 30-minute mark to take a tie game into the half.
Assisting the LeForce goal and the later goal from Corrigan was Hart who also scored the final goal of the game for the Falcons. Hart earned 50 minutes of playing time against Concord, twice as much as her previous season high. She made the most of her minutes, taking part in all three goals.
"She came in and did the job we needed her to do," Shiels said. "She works incredibly hard and did well as a target up front for us, which allowed us to get the ball forward and have it stick once it was up there."
With the fifth win of the year, all in conference play, the Falcons increase their lead in the Mountain East Conference standings as one of just two undefeated teams remaining. West Virginia Wesleyan, 4-0, is the other team without a loss while the next closest team is Charleston who carries a 2-1-2 MEC record.
"It's one of our goals every year to challenge for the conference title and to get into the post season," Shiels said. "I think, while we do have a lot of young players we also have players who have experience playing in this conference and know the standard we hold ourselves to."
Notre Dame will look to keep their winning streak on Wednesday, September 20 when the team will host Urbana. The game on Mueller field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
