The Falcons Shutout Warriors and Yellow Jackets

CEDARVILLE, Fla. – The Notre Dame Falcons were able to sweep their double-header on Wednesday morning with a 2-0 win over the Nyack College Warriors and then an 8-0 victory over the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets.

Game 1

The Falcons (5-5 overall) ended a two game losing streak with the win over Nyack. The Warriors (0-13 overall) have only scored four runs over their last four games.

The only runs of the game came from NDC in the bottom of the first inning. Nicole Luciano singles to center field to start the inning. Luciano moved to second on a Shelby Stephens sacrifice bunt. Emily Kusmits then slammed a two-run homer to center field.

The Falcons starting pitcher, Taylor Olson (3-2) was given the win as she threw a complete game shutout, only allowing four hits and struck out four batters. The first four hitters in the Falcons lineup combined to go 5-for-11 with two RBI. Perris Stevens went 2-for-2 and walked once.

For Nyack College, Brittany Blair (0-5) took the loss after she went six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.

Game 2

With the win, the Falcons hold a record of 6-5, while Cedarville (4-5) has dropped three in a row.

The Falcons got on the board early, once again. In the top of the second inning, Perris Stevens came up with runners on second and third base. Stevens roped a single into right field, scoring Maria Vanadia from third. Two batters later, Rachelle Miller hit a single to the shortstop, Sarah Parsons, which scored Erin Calhoun.

NDC expanded the lead in the fourth inning when Emily Kusmits scored on a wild pitch by the relief pitcher, Morgan Arbogast, who had just entered the game. Vanadia then singled down the right field line, scoring Shelby Stephens. Calhoun stepped to the plate and reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, Kara Eiginger, which allowed Kusmits to touch the plate for the third run of the inning.

The Falcons then put three more runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. With bases loaded, Stephens doubled, scoring two runs. Vanadia came up with one out and hit a groundball to second. She was out on the play, but Nicole Luciano scored from third base.

For the Falcons, Luciano, Stephens, Kusmits and Calhoun all had two hits. The first five hitters in the lineup had nine hits, four RBI and five runs scored. Miller started and went two innings, walked three and struck out two, but did not give up a hit. Kusmits (3-1) got the win as she pitched the final three innings, giving up two hits but did not surrender a run.

Lucia Eroshevich (1-2) started in the pitcher's circle for Cedarville, and was given the loss after going 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits. The Yellow Jackets committed four errors in the game.

The Falcons finish their Florida trip with a double-header tomorrow. NDC will play Southwest Minnesota State, at 1 p.m. and the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, at 3:30 p.m.
