Clermont, Fla. – The Notre Dame Falcons beat the Wayne State College Wildcats, 6-5, with a walk-off single in the tenth inning, on Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons (2-2) have reached the .500-mark on the season and the Wildcats (1-10) have lost eight straight games.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, NDC was threatening with bases loaded.
Alyssa Larson, who came on as a pinch runner, scored on an error by the third baseman Alyssa Schropp. With two outs,
Erin Calhoun singled to right field, scoring both,
Rachelle Miller and
Nicole Luciano. The Falcons went up 3-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, Jordyn Breitbarth singled and Monique Alyea walked before Blair Shanks, a pinch hitter, came up with a clutch, RBI single to center field, tying the game at three.
Melanie Alyea led off the top of the seventh with a double for WSC. With one out, Rachel Shumaker singled, moving the pinch-runner, Sarah Hunter, to third base. Breitbarth then hit a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run.
The Falcons need to respond in the bottom of the seventh inning and they did. NDC tied the game at four as
Shelby Stephens hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, scoring the pinch-runner
Myranda Rowland from third base.
The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the ninth inning but in the bottom of the ninth, the Falcons started the inning with
Amy Hoover on second base, per the international softball rules for extra innings. Two consecutive groundouts moved Hoover to third and across the plate to tie the game, once again.
In the bottom of the tenth inning, Miller was placed on second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Emily Kusmits. With two outs, Calhoun had the walk-off RBI single to plate Miller.
For the Falcons, Calhoun went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Miller started the game on the mound for Notre Dame and went five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, and struck out six hitters. Kusmits (2-0) picked up her second win of the day, giving the Falcons five innings of relief, allowing only one earned run.
Nataliah Hopkins (1-4) was the starting pitcher for Wayne State and went 9.2 innings. She picked up the loss and gave up six runs, two earned.
The Falcons will play Grand Valley State University at 8:30 p.m. in Clermont, Fla.
