NDC drops two games against Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday

WHEELING, W.Va. – Notre Dame College was defeated by Wheeling Jesuit University in both games of the double-header, 3-2 and 7-6, on Sunday afternoon.

The loss for the Falcons (8-7 overall, 0-2 MEC) snaps their four game winning streak. The Cardinals (7-5, 2-0 MEC) were playing for the first time since March 3. Their past six games had been cancelled.

Game 1

The Falcons fell behind early as Wheeling took a 3-0 advantage. In the bottom of the first inning, Cassie Holstein singled on a bunt. Later in the inning, with two outs, Holstein was on second and scored when Courtney Rogers singled to right field.

The Cardinals scored a run in the third inning on an RBI double by Kelsi Thompson and then added another run on an RBI single by Holstein to score Taylor DiPerna in the fourth inning.

Notre Dame could only muster four hits, but had a great opportunity in the fifth inning. Sarah Depp led off by reaching on an error by the first baseman, Dana Achille. Perris Stevens singled and then Amy Hoover reached on a fielder's choice, which resulted in every runner reaching safely. Halli Swiger came up with one out and plated a run for the Falcons.

NDC's second run of the game came in the seventh inning as Depp reached on another fielder's choice off of Hoover's bat.

For Notre Dame, Taylor Olson (4-3) was handed the loss as she started in the pitcher's circle and gave up three runs on ten hits over three innings.

Holstein and Thompson both had three hits for WJU. Starting pitcher Morgan Chapman (3-2) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, and struck out six batters. She was awarded the win.

Game 2

The offense came to life early in the game for Notre Dame, as they tied the game at one in the second inning with a lead-off home run by Emily Kusmits. The Falcons would add three more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Luciano and then RBI singles by Rachelle Miller and Maria Vanadia.

With runners on second and third base in the third inning, Luciano hit a single, which scored Erin Calhoun, putting the Falcons up, 5-1.

WJU scored two runs in the fourth inning, but NDC responded and put an insurance run on the board in the fifth. Depp led off with a single and scored later in the inning when Luciano singled to right field.

The Cardinals then came marching back and were clutch in their final at-bat. Molly Welsh led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Victoria Scott followed with an RBI double to center field. With two outs, Dana Achille hit a two run home run to tie the game up at six.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, with a runner on second base, Scott laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third and Welsh scored the winning run on a Rogers single.

Luciano, Shelby Stephens, Calhoun and Depp all had multi-hit games. Luciano tallied three RBI and a double, as well. Miller was the starting pitcher but only recorded one out, while giving up a run. Kusmits (3-2) pitched eight innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits and was saddled with the loss.

For Wheeling, Welsh, Scott, Achille and DiPerna all had multi-hit games. Achille had a double and a home run. Rogers got the win for the Cardinals, as she was the third pitcher to enter the circle, in the game. She pitched three innings, allowing no hits and only walking two hitters.

NDC will now travel to West Liberty, W.Va. to play the Hilltoppers, tomorrow, March 20 for a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
