SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College broke a program record by knocking down 21 three pointers, leading to a 93-87 victory over Penn State University Greater Allegheny on Wednesday afternoon.
As a precursor to what was to come throughout the game, senior
Kyauta Taylor and redshirt-sophomore
Drew Scarberry each had a three pointer to put the Falcons (3-3) up 6-0 with 18:18 remaining in the first half.
"We just went into the game and once we saw that 3-2 zone, our eyes opened up," Taylor said, after the contest.
PSUGA (5-3) had help from Jordan Payne who tied the game by himself with back-to-back three pointers. Makis Rivera hit a jumper with 14:48 to go in the half, which gave the Nittany Lions their largest lead of the game, going ahead by seven points (15-8).
After that point, the Falcons hit three consecutive shots from three point range to grab the lead by a score of 17-15 at the 13:06-mark.
NDC would take their largest lead of the half with 2:12 to go before halftime when Taylor knocked down a three pointer. But Penn State Greater Allegheny would tie the game with a 7-0 run before the half which included four points from Curtis Newby.
After the halftime break, the Nittany Lions scored the first five points, but freshman
Levi Frankland tied the game up by himself with a three pointer and a layup. Frankland had all 21 of his points in the second half and either scored or assisted on 30 of the Falcons 51 second half points.
A three pointer by Taylor with 12:54 left in the game, pushed the Falcons lead to 14 points as they led 66-52.
The Falcons would increase their lead to 14 points (87-73) again at the 4:25 mark, but the Nittany Lions chipped away at the lead. PSUGA put together an 11-2 run which included six points from George Prota and with 50-seconds remaining, the NDC lead was chopped down to five points (89-84).
Notre Dame made four free throws in the final 43-seconds and held on to win the game by a score of 93-87.
"Obviously, it's good to get the win before we go into Thanksgiving break. With a lot of guys out, other guys contributed," head coach
Tim Koenig said. "
Jacob Sawman came off the bench and gave some really good minutes especially on the defensive end."
Penn State Greater Allegheny received 30 points from Paine as he shot 8-for-11 behind the three point line. Newby scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kenneth Rouse added 16 points and Rivera had 12 points. The Nittany Lions shot 53-percent (36-for-68) from the field and 50-percent (14-for-28) from three. In the second half the team shot 61-percent.
The NDC program record for three pointers made in a game was 16, which had been done three times, and the program record in three pointers attempted was 45, set in the 2015-16 season. Today, the Falcons offense went 21-for-49 (43-percent) from three. Head coach
Tim Koenig said that 49 was not the plan, but his team has the green light if they're open.
For the Falcons, Taylor had 33 points on 52-percent (11-for-21) shooting as well as going 8-for-16 from three point land. He also had 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Frankland reached a career-high with his 21 points and five assists. Scarberry had 16 points and
Ja'Sean Lewis grabbed 11 rebounds, had four points and four assists.
Taylor said, "I felt like I had to be a leader and take over since our two starters were out,
Will Vorhees and
Halil Parks, and I had to lock in like the Kobe (Bryant) mentality."
Koenig said, "I'm most happy about the job that KT (Taylor) and
Jack Kelsheimer did in the second half on Jordan Paine. Paine was unbelievable, just look at the stats. Jack and KT did a way better job in the second half on him. Team effort too, but those two guys in particular really did a nice job defensively."
Notre Dame will have an extended break before they play a home game against No. 11 Wheeling Jesuit University on November 29. The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
