ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Notre Dame College was outscored in the second half and fell to Roberts Wesleyan College by a score of 79-76, on Wednesday evening. In the loss, junior
Ja'Sean Lewis broke an NDC program record for most rebounds in a game, grabbing 25 boards.
The Falcons (1-2) struggled to control the ball early on in the contest. Roberts Wesleyan (3-0), who is off their best start since the 2010-11 season, expanded their lead to four points (11-7) following NDC's fourth turnover by the 14:05 mark.
After that point in the game, Notre Dame played much better in the first half. They did not have a turnover in the next seven minutes, put together a 13-5 scoring run and led 20-16 with 7:04 to go in the stanza.
RWC took a 21-20 lead with six and-a-half minutes remaining before the halftime break, but that would be their last lead in the half. NDC retook the lead with senior
Kyauta Taylor scoring seven of Notre Dame's next 10 points.
A fast break layup by freshman
Halil Parks with 41-seconds remaining gave the Falcons their first double-digit lead (39-29). Freshman
Levi Frankland hit a layup near the end of the half, putting Notre Dame on top, 41-30.
The good times continued for NDC when the second half started. The Falcons scored six of the first eight points in the half. With 17:38 remaining, Notre Dame held their largest lead of the game, which was 15 points (47-32).
Over the next seven minutes, the Redhawks chipped away at the deficit and by the 10:38 mark, two free throws by Justin Vaughan tied the game at 53.
The game remained close and the two teams traded buckets. After the initial tie at 53, the two teams were knotted up three separate times. The Falcons went on another run, and with 2:44 remaining in the game, a three pointer by redshirt-sophomore
Drew Scarberry put NDC up 71-65.
The Redhawks then put together a run of their own and took a 75-73 lead off of a layup by Peyton McLaurin with 56-seconds left. They would never give the lead back and won by a score of 79-76.
"This was a tough loss," head coach
Tim Koenig said. "We have to finish our defensive possessions. We gave them second and third chances in the second half. We missed a lot of free throws, layups and open shots. If you don't make shots, you have to be that much better in the other areas of the game and we were not good enough tonight. It is early and we will get better. We are looking forward to getting back on the practice floor tomorrow and then having the opportunity to play this Saturday at home."
To go along with his 25 rebounds, Lewis hauled in nine offensive boards. He broke the program record which was 21, set by Geovonte Rose in 2014. The junior from Columbus, Ohio had 14 rebounds at the half. Taylor went 3-for-5 from behind the three point line and finished the game with 19 points. Scarberry had 12 points and shot 38-percent from three point range. Redshirt-junior
Angelo Cugini scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 29 minutes. The Falcons missed nine free throws and shot 40-percent from the field.
McLaurin made five three pointers and shot 73-percent from the field, finishing with 21 points. He made all three, three point shots in the second half. Jean Toussaint recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Bush recorded 12 points and four steals. The Redhawks shot 38-percent for the game, but went 17-for-38 in the second half.
Notre Dame will come home for the first time this season to battle Concord University on November 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
