WHEELING, W.Va. – A late Wheeling Jesuit University goal in the 83rd minute tied the match at one, but Notre Dame College scored in the seventh minute of overtime to beat the Cardinals, 2-1.
The Falcons (7-4, 5-3 MEC) played in their second overtime game of the season and are now 1-1 in those games. With the win, NDC has swept the season series with WJU. The Cardinals (3-7-1, 1-6) are 2-3 in their last five games. Both of their losses to Notre Dame this season have been decided by one goal.
In the first half, NDC had multiple chances to get a shot into the goal, but could not convert. Notre Dame had 10 shots and four shots on goal which included two shots on goal by sophomore
Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque. Senior
Reymar Klochko entered the game off the bench and took three shots before halftime. Wheeling Jesuit only took two shots in the half.
Head coach
Carl Nolan said the game plan was to start with much needed intensity against the Cardinals.
"We wanted to start the game with a high tempo as Wheeling Jesuit is a real hard-nosed, aggressive team," he mentioned. "The aim was to meet their intensity and then settle on the ball. We were admittedly patchy at this, but the players did work very hard."
Notre Dame was still very aggressive in the second half as senior
Leonardo Paiva took a shot that hit the post in the 49th minute. In the 60th minute, the Falcons took two shots within 40 seconds but neither hit the net. NDC would not get their first goal until Paiva scored his eighth goal of the season, a long shot that just snuck past the goalkeeper, Josh Zimmerman. The assist was credited to sophomore
Mats Jota.
The Cardinals did not get on the board until Manny Del Rio put the ball in the back of the net from the right side of the field, tying the game at one. Eventually, that goal would force overtime.
In the 97th minute of the game, Paiva brought the ball down the field for Notre Dame and took a shot from the left side of the penalty box. The shot bounced off of Zimmerman's hands and Klochko was ready for the ricochet as he knocked the ball into the back corner of the goal, for his second goal of the campaign and second goal against Wheeling Jesuit this season.
"The winning goal was a great run and drive at goal from Leo Paiva and Reymar was very alert and brave to dive in and finish off the move on the line," Nolan said.
Paiva took eight shots and four shots on goal. Both Albuquerque and Klochko took three shots on goal. The Falcons took 13 more shots than Wheeling Jesuit.
For Wheeling Jesuit, Zimmerman had nine saves in goal. Martin Minuzzi recorded four shots. The only shot on goal for the Cardinals was Del Rio's goal.
Notre Dame College will travel to Athens, W.Va. to battle Concord University on October 12. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m.
