Notre Dame grabs a big win over West Virginia Wesleyan

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College got revenge on West Virginia Wesleyan College with a 1-0 win on Sunday, in the Falcons final regular season home game of the season.

The Falcons (11-4, 8-3 MEC) have won five straight games and end the regular season home portion of their schedule with a record of 6-1. NDC also avenged their 1-0 loss on the road to West Virginia Wesleyan on September 14. The Bobcats (9-5-2, 7-3) are now 3-2-1 in their last six games and are 3-3-2 on the road in 2017.

The Bobcats took the first three shots in the game but none of them found the back of the goal. Conor Davies' shot went high, Juwon Akintunde's shot was saved by sophomore Daniele De Angelis and Matthew Bentley's shot was also saved. In the 20th minute, senior Leonardo Paiva took the first shot of the game for NDC and it was saved by Alessandro Armenia. Three of Notre Dame's four shots in the first half came off the foot of Paiva.

Notre Dame came very close to scoring in the 52nd minute when Paiva had a shot that went over the goal keeper's head but also went over the goal, barely missing the crossbar.

In the 54th minute, WVWC had a very good scoring chance. Guillermo Rueda took a corner kick for West Virginia Wesleyan and Davies took a shot that rolled just to the right of the goal.

Guilherme Gloria Albuquerque scored his fourth goal of the season in the 81st minute. The pass came from Paiva as both players were in the penalty box and Paiva was able to pass the ball to the left, right into the path of Albuquerque.

"Guilherme was a true impact in the second half, and he did it while only half fit," said head coach Carl Nolan. "Powerful running and great timing."

Following the goal, Notre Dame's defense stepped up and did not allow WVWC to take another shot in the game.

Albuquerque scored three goals in the two games this past week, and scored his first game winning goal of the campaign. Paiva has three assists this season. De Angelis recorded five saves and his fourth consecutive shutout. The Falcons have eight shutouts in 2017.

"The team today played how they were asked to. Structure and disciplined was the message," Nolan mentioned.

Juwon Akintunde, who scored the game winning goal against NDC earlier this year, has 16 goals and 32 points this season but was held to one shot in Sunday's game.

In the regional rankings, released last week, Notre Dame is currently in fifth place and WVWC is in sixth.

Notre Dame will play their final regular season conference game on the road against Urbana University on October 25. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
