WISE, Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons lost a first half lead on the road against the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon, as they dropped a 12-9 decision to the Cavs in Mountain East Conference action.
The Falcons (5-5, 1-3 MEC) have now lost three out of their last four overall, while the win for the Cavaliers (9-2, 3-0 MEC) put them in second place in the conference, right behind Wheeling Jesuit.
Notre Dame got out to an incredible start. While the Cavaliers scored the game's first goal less than 30 seconds into the game, Notre Dame tied the game on a goal from
Ashlee Boyko on an assist from
Victoria Martin at the 28:20-mark.
Darbie Barkman scored a goal just over a minute later to give the Falcons their first lead of the game, which was all part of NDC's 5-2 run to start the contest. During the aforementioned run, Martin, and
Brooke Czarnecki both scored goals as well, as the Falcons held a three goal lead with 22:12 remaining.
Barkman scored her second goal of the game with 11:36 left in the half, before the Cavs scored the final two goals of the opening half, including one at the buzzer, which brought the deficit down to one (7-6).
Those two goals were the beginning of a 4-0 run for the Cavaliers, and they regained the lead with 28:07 left, before Czarnecki scored NDC's next two goals to give the Falcons an 8-7 advantage. The Cavs tied the game less than a minute later, before Czarnecki scored NDC's last goal of the game with 19:46 to play.
The Cavs ended the game by scoring four straight goals in the final 16 minutes to win the game.
Czarnecki led the way for the Falcons with five goals on the day, to go along with a pair of ground balls. Barkman scored twice, had four ground balls and two draw controls. Boyko added a goal, while Martin had a goal, two assists and led NDC with five draw controls.
Lauren Ragsdale had seven saves on the afternoon, and led NDC with nine ground balls.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, April 15, when they host their final home game of the season against Shepherd at 4 p.m.
