Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcon Lacrosse team was back in action on Tuesday afternoon, and suffered their second loss of the season, in a 17-13 loss to Walsh.
For the Falcons (2-2) the loss was their first on the road this season, while the victory for the Cavaliers (2-0) came in their home opener, as they remain unbeaten on the season.
Walsh scored the game's first goal just 39 seconds into the contest. About a minute and a half later, Notre Dame tied the game at 1-1 on
Darbie Barkman's first of three goals in the period, on an assist from
Ashlee Boyko.
After Walsh's second goal, Barkman scored again with 21:21 left in the period to tie the game at 2-2, before the Cavaliers responded with three consecutive goals over the next three minutes of action to regain the lead, and they kept the lead the rest of the way.
The Falcons took advantage of a pair of penalties, as they scored two of their next three goals with the Cavaliers playing one short. Boyko scored a goal in a man-up situation at the 15:13-mark and Barkman scored less than a minute later with 14:22 left in the period.
Notre Dame took advantage of another Man-Up situation, as
Caitlin Howard scored off a
Halie Taylor assist to bring the Falcns back within one (6-5) with 10:26 left in the first period. But Walsh scored three of the final five goals of the first period, and took a 9-7 lead into the break.
Brooke Czarnecki was responsible for NDC's last two goals of the half.
Czarnecki scored again for the Falcons, less than a minute into the second period to make it a one goal (9-8) game once again, but the Cavaliers then went on a 4-0 run over the next seven minutes to take their largest lead of the game (13-8).
The Falcons caught fire over the next 10 minutes, as they got goals from Taylor, Czarnecki, Howard and
Bailey Reardon to bring the deficit back down to two (14-12) with 13:30 remaining, but they could not get any closer as the Cavaliers were able to hang on for the win.
Czarnecki led the way for the Falcons with five goals on the day, getting three of those in the second half, and added four ground balls. Barkman had three goals and caused three turnovers, and Howard added a pair of goals as well. Reardon, Boyko and Taylor scored one goal each, while Taylor and Boyko each added a pair of assists. The Falcons had 21 ground balls as a team, and
Vanessa Delano led the way with five.
The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, March 19 when the play host to Franciscan University of Steubenville at Normandy Field. The contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
