Falcons fall in Bird Bash

NDC drops 22-9 decision to Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons fell in their second to last match of the regular season, dropping a 22-9 decision to Wheeling Jesuit on Friday afternoon. 

The Falcons (2-6, 1-3 MEC) have now lost three games in a row, while the Cardinals (5-7, 3-1 MEC) have won two of their last three contests. 

In the first period, Wheeling Jesuit used a pair of big runs to take a comfortable lead, and they never trailed at any point throughout the contest. They led 15-5 at the break, and they fired off 40 shots, to Notre Dame's 19. 

Wheeling Jesuit scored three goals in the opening two minutes of the contest, before the Falcons responded with at the 27:33-mark on Brooke Czarnecki's first of four goals on the afternoon. 

A few moments after Czarnecki's goal, the Cardinals added another, before Darbie Barkman found the back of the net with 26:02 left in the opening period. The Cardinals responded with a 6-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a commanding, 10-2 lead. 

Barkman, Czarnecki and Ashlee Boyko all scored goals in the final 16 minutes of the first period, but it was not enough to dig into the deficit, as the Cardinals took a 15-5 lead going into the half. 

Notre Dame scored the first two goals of the second period, and three of the first five. Barkman and Allison Merten both scored for the Falcons six minutes into the second period. Czarnecki added two more goals for the Falcons, getting the final goal with 13:30 left to play, before the Cardinals scored the final three goals of the contest. 

Czarnecki's four goals led the way for the Falcons. She also added a couple of ground balls. Barkman had a trio of goals on the afternoon, while Merten and Boyko scored as well. Merten also added an assist, to go along with a team high, three ground balls. 

The Falcons are in action again on Sunday, April 19, when they play their final regular season game in the Mountain East against West Virginia Wesleyan, in Buckhannon, W.Va. The contest is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
