Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons had a tough first half on Saturday afternoon against Lake Erie, and it cost them as they fell to the Storm, 17-7.
For the Falcons (0-3), the loss was their third in a row to start the season, while the win for the Storm (1-1) was their first of the season, in what was their first contest in nearly three weeks after having their last three games canceled.
The contest did not start well for the Falcons, as the Storm scored the first seven goals, and it was
Darbie Barkman who halted Lake Erie's 7-0 to start the contest, as she scored an unassisted goal with 16:19 left in the opening period to get the Falcons on the board.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, Barkman's goal was the only one they scored in the opening period, as the Storm went into the break with 14-1 advantage.
Things did get better for the Falcons in the second period, where they outscored the Storm, 6-3. Lake Erie scored the first two goals of the period, but the Falcons closed out the game on a 6-1 run over the final 22 minutes of the contest.
The aforementioned run to close out the game began with Barkman's second goal of the contest, coming with 21:10 remaining.
Brooke Czarnecki caught fire during that stretch as well, scoring three goals on free position shots.
Czarnecki and Barkman both had three goals in the contest, while
Ashlee Boyko added one as well. Czarnecki had a nice game defensively as well, coming away with three ground balls, and she caused five turnover as well.
The Falcons are in action on Thursday, March 19, for their home opener at Normandy Field. Notre Dame will play host to Ursuline, and the contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
