Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- In their second game of the 2015 season, the Notre Dame Falcons fell on the road to Walsh, 16-10.
For the Falcons (0-2), the loss was their second in a row to start the season, while the win for the Cavaliers (1-2) was their first of the year, snapping a two-game slide, and was their first in three tries against NDC.
Notre Dame put the pressure on Walsh early, as the opening period was very tightly contested before Walsh began to run away with it in the second stanza.
Walsh fired the first shot, scoring at the 28:01-mark, before the Falcons scored three consecutive goals to claim a 3-1 advantage, their largest of the afternoon. The first two goals on that run were scored by
Allison Merten, and then
Darbie Barkman found the back of the net with 12:55 left in the half to give the Falcons the lead.
However, Walsh responded quickly, with a 3-0 run of their own, and they outscored the Falcons, 6-2 through the remainder of the opening period, and took a 7-5 lead into the break.
Walsh opened the second period by scoring the first six goals to pull away, taking a 13-5 advantage, before
Brooke Czarnecki brought an end to that run, with her second goal of the game, scoring on a free position shot with 18:23 left.
Czarnecki went on to score the next two goals for NDC, as they would outscore the Cavaliers, 5-3 over the final 19 minutes of the contest, but it was not enough to erase Walsh's big run to start the half, as the Cavaliers came away with the win.
Four Falcons scored multiple times in the contest, as Czarnecki led the way with four goals and an assist. She also led the Falcons with six ground balls. Merten, Barkman and
Halie Taylor each added a pair of goals. Barkman caused a pair of turnovers and added five ground balls.
The Falcons are in action this weekend, when they square off against Lake Erie College, in Painesville, Ohio. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
